Elon Musk, on the verge of becoming the world\u2019s first trillionaire<\/a>, is whipping up anti-immigration tensions amid ongoing riots in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Following a knife attack in the city on Monday, Musk declared support for Restore Britain, a hard-right populist political party that advocates for large-scale migrant deportation in the UK. He reposted statements from party leader Rupert Lowe calling for<\/a> \u201ca vast number of people\u201d to be forced out of the country, as well as a promise from Lowe to \u201cprosecute officials and politicians who knowingly placed dangerous third world savages in our communities.\u201d \u201cThis is the way,\u201d Musk added<\/a> to his repost.<\/p>\n

Musk also shared a list<\/a> of protest locations in the city, saying, \u201cOnly by protesting REPEATEDLY and LOUDLY will there be any change!!\u201d<\/p>\n

The suspected attacker is a Sudanese refugee legally residing in the UK, according to The New York Times<\/a>. Videos of the attack circulated on social media, including on X. In response, rioters gathered on the streets of Belfast, setting vehicles and homes ablaze, mostly in immigrant communities. The Irish News reports<\/a> that rioters also threw bricks, glass bottles, and wood at police on Wednesday, who responded by firing water cannons. That day, Musk reposted an X post<\/a> mocking the notion that \u201cYou can\u2019t solve problems with violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Musk, who has long used his X account<\/a> to espouse white supremacist rhetoric and <\/a>antisemitic conspiracy theories<\/a>, is posting a wave of anti-immigrant content as his company SpaceX prepares for its stock market debut<\/a> later this week. (\u201cThe actions and statements of Mr. Musk,\u201d which \u201cfrequently receive an immense amount of media attention,\u201d are listed as a risk factor<\/a> in SpaceX\u2019s IPO filings.) In addition to his comments on Belfast, he used his X account to call for two Iraqi suspects in a German rape trial to be executed<\/a> and responded to another X user\u2019s post reading \u201cyou can\u2019t teach savages not to rape\u201d with<\/a> \u201cMurderous migrants must go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Musk also replied to a post containing an image of the knife attack and a caption that called for politicians to face \u201cconsequences\u201d for allowing \u201cthis to flow into Europe.\u201d In response<\/a>, Musk said<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, and that day cannot come soon enough.\u201d The posts from Lowe endorsed large-scale deportation, saying that \u201cMillions and millions need to leave or be made to leave.\u201d This isn\u2019t the first time Musk has inserted himself into anti-immigrant protests abroad. Last year, Musk appeared virtually at a far-right rally<\/a> in London, saying the UK needs \u201crevolutionary government change.\u201d He\u2019s previously expressed fears that white people will go \u201cextinct.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement on X<\/a>, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence in Belfast and acknowledged the role played by social media. \u201cThere is no justification for the violence and disorder that we saw threatening our communities, nor for those who encouraged it, online or elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ofcom, the UK\u2019s communications regulator, also warned online platforms<\/a> that they have an obligation to take down illegal content under the Online Safety Act<\/a>. \u201cFollowing a serious knife attack that took place in Belfast on Monday night, we have seen civil unrest in the city, some of which appears to have been incited online,\u201d Oliver Griffiths, Ofcom\u2019s group director for online safety, writes. \u201cThis has included racially motivated incidents of violence, arson attacks on homes and vehicles, and attacks against police.\u201d<\/p>\n

Musk responded to accusations<\/a> that he\u2019s contributing to unrest, saying, \u201cMurderous migrants beheading innocent people in their home town is what\u2019s making people angry, not \u2018social media\u2019!\u201d<\/p>\n
