New Jersey high school students will be connected directly to registered apprenticeships and skilled trade careers through a new Bloomberg Philanthropies initiative involving Big Picture Learning and the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Big Picture Learning, in partnership with the carpenters union council, announced it is part of Bloomberg Philanthropies\u2019 $90 million national initiative to create new pathways from high school into registered apprenticeships and high-wage skilled trade jobs. The program will launch in nine regions across the country, including New Jersey.<\/p>\n

The initiative is designed to address workforce shortages in the skilled trades while giving students earlier access to career pathways in construction and related fields. In New Jersey, the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters will serve as the primary apprenticeship and industry training partner.<\/p>\n

Over the next three years, more than 300 graduates are expected to enter registered apprenticeships through the New Jersey effort, according to the announcement.<\/p>\n

The program, which will be free for students, will focus on multiple in-demand roles, including carpenters, millwrights, floor coverers, pile drivers, dockbuilders and cabinetmakers. Students will have access to paid work-based learning, training, certifications, college coursework, industry-recognized credentials and paid summer employment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are proud to partner with Big Picture Learning and Bloomberg Philanthropies on this transformative initiative because we know the future of the skilled trades depends on creating clear, accessible pathways for the next generation of workers,\u201d said William Sproule, executive secretary-treasurer of the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters.<\/p>\n

Sproule said the program comes as demand continues to grow for trained union carpenters in infrastructure, housing and clean energy projects.<\/p>\n

The New Jersey effort will be organized through START Centers, which are intended to serve as statewide coordinating hubs linking schools, unions, industry partners and workforce systems. Students will participate across multiple sites for internships, training and employment experiences before transitioning into apprenticeships after graduation.<\/p>\n

Partners already involved include Associated Construction Contractors of New Jersey, Barringer High School, Camden County Technical Schools\u2019 Gloucester and Pennsauken campuses, Carpenter Contractor Trust, Essex County Schools of Technology, the state of New Jersey and other education and workforce organizations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe New Jersey Department of Labor has been proud to partner with the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters to help grow apprenticeship in New Jersey, and we look forward to the impact this expansion of their training programs will have,\u201d Acting Labor Commissioner Kevin D. Jarvis said.<\/p>\n
