A progressive Onondaga County lawmaker in Syracuse is hoping to unseat one of Central New York\u2019s longest-serving state legislators.<\/p>\n
Maurice \u201cMo\u201d Brown is challenging Bill Magnarelli in a race to represent New York state’s 129th Assembly District, which includes parts of the city of Syracuse and its western suburbs.<\/p>\n
Magnarelli, who\u2019s held the seat for nearly three decades, says he still has what it takes.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve learned where to go, how to get things done and to get results,\u201d Magnarelli said.<\/p>\n
Brown, who\u2019s served as a county legislator for three years, said he can bring something new and fresh to the table.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think we need to invest in Syracuseans in a way we\u2019ve not done before, and I\u2019m running to do that,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n
The Democratic candidates share a lot of the same priorities, including affordability, housing, healthcare and human rights.<\/p>\n
In elections past, Magnarelli has had little-to-no competition. Still, he says Brown\u2019s challenge doesn\u2019t faze him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m the better person for the job. I\u2019ve been there for 28 years. I know what\u2019s going on. I\u2019ve got a track record that is second-to-none as far as the things that I\u2019ve been able to do for Central New York,\u201d the assemblyman said.<\/p>\n
Brown believes it\u2019s time to pass the torch.<\/p>\n
\u201cI still think we can do better than what he\u2019s delivering, and that\u2019s why I\u2019m running, so that we can get better. We deserve better,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n
New York’s primary elections will be held Tuesday, June 23.
