{"id":861238,"date":"2026-06-12T02:36:31","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T02:36:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/861238\/"},"modified":"2026-06-12T02:36:31","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T02:36:31","slug":"trump-might-love-the-inflation-but-consumers-feel-the-pain-experts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/861238\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump might &#8216;love the inflation,&#8217; but consumers feel the pain: Experts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/108319710-17811094961781109493-46462920968-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"Trump says 'I love the inflation' after consumer price index hits 3-year high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You know what I really love? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/10\/trump-inflation-cpi-iran-oil.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">I love the inflation<\/a>,&#8221; President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> said Wednesday after the consumer price index climbed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/10\/cpi-inflation-report-may-2026.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">above 4%<\/a> for the first time in three years,\u00a0stemming from the Iran war&#8217;s surge in energy prices. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The numbers were great,&#8221; Trump, speaking with reporters in the Oval Office, said of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/cpi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CPI<\/a>\u00a0data released by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. households have been feeling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/08\/household-financial-worries-at-highest-level-since-2022-new-york-fed-says.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">less enthusiastic<\/a> about the impact of the Middle East conflict on the cost of everyday goods. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York&#8217;s monthly Survey of Consumer Expectations showed that the share of those respondents who see their current situation as &#8220;much worse&#8221; than a year ago hit a nearly four-year high.<\/p>\n<p>The oil shock has put upward pressure on prices at a time when many consumers are already struggling. <\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee \u2014 Minority estimates that tariffs and the war with Iran cost each household\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jec.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/democrats\/issue-briefs?ID=0A4C7185-0280-44D4-845C-A9DE524CAFE3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more than $3,100<\/a>\u00a0from 2025 through May of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Asked for comment, a White House spokesperson sent CNBC a link to a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/10\/us-news\/trump-brushes-off-major-inflation-spike-as-consumer-prices-skyrocket-i-love-the-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">New York Post story<\/a>, in which Trump said he loved the fact that inflation wasn&#8217;t higher. &#8220;The numbers are much lower than anticipated,&#8221; he told the New York Post on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Read more CNBC personal finance coverage<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/10\/heres-the-inflation-breakdown-for-may-2026-in-one-chart.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elevated prices<\/a>\u00a0on essentials like groceries and gasoline limit how far workers can stretch their paychecks, experts say. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For most American households, they have negative real earnings growth; it&#8217;s hard to spin that positively in any way,&#8221; said certified financial planner Stephen Kates, a financial analyst at Bankrate.\u00a0&#8220;Most of the earnings gains have been erased by this inflation spike.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With average hourly earnings rising 3.4% from the previous year, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/empsit.nr0.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>, wage growth now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/05\/jobs-report-may-2026.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lags inflation<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>An annual inflation rate at 4.2% means\u00a0&#8220;you are devaluing the assets and the income of U.S. residents \u2014 that is a huge problem,&#8221; said Wayne Winegarden, an economist at Pacific Research Institute, a conservative think tank. &#8220;To minimize that impact is troubling.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With inflation outpacing paychecks, Americans&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/28\/savings-inflation-americans-financial-stress.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">personal savings rate<\/a> also recently hit the lowest level since 2022, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-05\/pi0426.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Longer-term inflation expectations<\/p>\n<p>Trump said again this week that a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/09\/trump-iran-war-deal-days.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deal with Iran could be reached<\/a> in the days ahead, and that the critical Strait of Hormuz would reopen &#8220;immediately&#8221; after that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Once the war is over, inflation is &#8220;going to come down like a rock,&#8221; Trump said Wednesday, even as tensions in the Middle East escalated. &#8220;When it&#8217;s over, you will see oil drop to where it was before,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The comments came after\u00a0Trump said that the U.S. would hit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/10000297\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;very hard&#8221; again. <\/p>\n<p>The president has made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/10\/trump-iran-deal-oil-markets-stocks.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">many similar comments<\/a> in recent months about a peace deal being nearly at hand. The war crossed the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/07\/iran-war-100-days-trump-stocks-sp500-bonds-oil.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">100-day mark<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>But even once the U.S. and Iran negotiate a peace deal, the war&#8217;s inflationary effects could take weeks or months to unwind, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The speed of reopening the Strait will be very important for future cost pressures, and consequent pass-through to consumers,&#8221; BlackRock fixed income chief Rick Rieder said in a statement Wednesday, referring to the key waterway used to transport\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/07\/oil-prices-iran-war-trump-deadline-strait-hormuz.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">about a fifth of the world&#8217;s oil<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/06\/surging-gas-prices-are-hurting-lower-income-households-harder-study-shows.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gas<\/a> prices, which\u00a0have been a particular pain point since the start of the Iran war, may not ease that quickly, according to Bankrate&#8217;s Kates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You are still looking at an enormous increase year over year,&#8221; Kates said.
