Others have drawn attention because of the personalities involved \u2014 including a Trump-backed sticker tycoon running a provocative campaign upstate and a Kennedy heir vying for a Manhattan seat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Primary Day is Tuesday, June 23. Here\u2019s what to know.<\/p>\n<p>When, Where and How to Vote<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">New York is a closed primary state, meaning Democrats and Republicans can vote only in their own parties\u2019 primaries. Unaffiliated or independent voters cannot participate in primaries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The early voting period in New York City begins on Saturday, June 13, the same day that voter registration ends, and runs through Sunday, June 21.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Polls are open at the times listed below, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vote.nyc\/elections\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Board of Elections<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"css-yej98i e1s5juxr0\">\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c e17iupae0\">\n<p class=\"css-11haxaj e1me5xab0\">June 13 to June 15: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c e17iupae0\">\n<p class=\"css-11haxaj e1me5xab0\">June 16 and June 17: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c e17iupae0\">\n<p class=\"css-11haxaj e1me5xab0\">June 18: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c e17iupae0\">\n<p class=\"css-11haxaj e1me5xab0\">June 19 to June 21: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">On Primary Day, polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., which is also the last day to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vote.nyc\/RequestBallot\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">mail a ballot or drop it off<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Early voting locations are often different from Primary Day polling places. Voters can check their early voting sites on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/findmypollsite.vote.nyc\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">the Board of Elections website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What to Watch For<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The three most competitive races are most likely in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/01\/nyregion\/new-york-primary-midterm-elections.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York\u2019s 10th District, the 12th District and the 13th District<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">In the 10th District in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, the former city comptroller and Mamdani ally Brad Lander is challenging Dan Goldman, a two-term representative and high-profile Trump antagonist. Support for Israel has taken center stage in the progressive district, which has a large Jewish population: Allies of Mr. Lander, who has called the war in Gaza a genocide, have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/23\/nyregion\/dan-goldman-brad-lander-congress.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">attacked Mr. Goldman<\/a> for his ties to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">In the 12th District, which spans Manhattan\u2019s middle section from the Upper West Side and Upper East Side down to Chelsea and the East Village, the retirement of Representative Jerrold Nadler has left a vacant seat. Jack Schlossberg has attracted attention for his Kennedy connection and his <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/14\/nyregion\/jack-schlossberg-campaign.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oddball approach to campaigning<\/a>, while the former Republican <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/03\/nyregion\/george-conway-trump-congress.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">George T. Conway III<\/a> has focused narrowly on his opposition to Mr. Trump, and the state lawmakers Micah Lasher and Alex Bores have duked it out in a race where most of the candidates are largely ideologically aligned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Uptown in the 13th District, stretching from Upper Manhattan to parts of the Bronx, Mr. Mamdani was expected to endorse the five-term incumbent, Adriano Espaillat. But late last month, he shook up the race by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/28\/nyregion\/adriano-espaillat-darializa-avila-chevalier-mamdani.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">throwing his support behind<\/a> Darializa Avila Chevalier, an organizer and fellow democratic socialist. Ms. Avila Chevalier has taken heat for past social media posts \u2014 since deleted \u2014 in which she expressed support for abolishing prisons and defunding the police and questioned Israel\u2019s right to exist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Another race, in the Seventh District in gentrifying parts of Brooklyn and Queens, pits Antonio Reynoso, the progressive Brooklyn borough president, against Claire Valdez, a democratic socialist and relative newcomer to the State Assembly who <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/08\/nyregion\/claire-valdez-congress-mamdani.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">entered the race at the mayor\u2019s urging<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Races Around the State<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Voters will also choose their candidate for state comptroller. Thomas P. DiNapoli, a Democrat, has securely held the post for nearly two decades; <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/27\/nyregion\/ny-comptroller-dinapoli-primary-challenge.html?eafs_enabled=false\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he has never before had a primary challenger<\/a>. Now, two newcomers running to his left \u2014 Raj Goyle and Drew Warshaw \u2014 are looking to capitalize on the energy Mr. Mamdani injected into politics across the state to unseat Mr. DiNapoli, the second-longest serving comptroller in state history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Other key races are taking place north of the city. In the 17th District, Democrats will choose their challenger to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/22\/nyregion\/trump-lawler-rockland-ny.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Lawler<\/a>, a Trump ally and one of the most vulnerable House Republicans. And in the right-leaning 21st District in upstate New York, Republicans are locked in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/21\/nyregion\/constantino-stickers-campaign.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bitter primary fight<\/a> to replace Representative Elise Stefanik.<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor\u2019s Role<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">As Mr. Mamdani looks to use his own popularity to secure more seats for left-leaning candidates, his support has been a boon for the campaigns of Ms. Valdez, Mr. Lander and Ms. Avila Chevalier. Taking advantage of the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/29\/nyregion\/knicks-nba-finals-nyc.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Knicks-induced fever sweeping across New York City<\/a>, the mayor appeared in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/03\/nyregion\/mamdani-knicks-ad-campaign.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">basketball-themed campaign ad<\/a> alongside his three picks that ran during the N.B.A. Finals, presenting the candidates by saying, \u201cNew York, we know anything is possible with a great team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cGet out and vote,\u201d Mr. Mamdani says in the ad. \u201cThis is the team.
