ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Ravens are resident birds. They don\u2019t migrate. In the winter, they can be found everywhere, and by the summer, most of them have flown off to a remote location to do their nesting thing.<\/p>\n
They like their privacy because privacy means security.<\/p>\n
However, there is a raven family in the Mountain View neighborhood of Anchorage. For the third year in a row, they have nested on the front of the Bass Pro Shops, right out in the open, and they may have found the ultimate camouflage. <\/p>\n
They\u2019ve constructed their nest right on the top of a reproduction woolly mammoth skull. It\u2019s hanging three stories up on the front of the store. Sticks and twigs hang down, adding the woolly to the mammoth. The evidence to make you look up can be found by looking down: the drop zone for the birdy bathroom.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a full nest with four adult-sized fledglings. When awake, they stand at the ready with mouths open in anticipation of the next meal, occasionally trying out wings that will eventually take them aloft, testing out their singing voices so they can one day sing their funny songs.<\/p>\n
Come fall, the nest will be empty. Right now is a good time to see the nesting ravens. It\u2019s a unique, urban opportunity. <\/p>\n
