(ABC News: Adam Kennedy)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You buy them because they&#8217;re meant to be compostable,&#8221; Ms Clifford said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re more expensive than a regular cup, and that&#8217;s because they&#8217;re meant to be better for the environment.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;What&#8217;s the point? (ABC News: Adam Kennedy)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We don&#8217;t have facilities in the ACT that can handle some types of material such as this,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Everything here is compostable, but I don&#8217;t have anywhere to put that compostable material other than a landfill bin or a recycling bin.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Without those facilities, the mandated packaging ends up in one of two places: landfill, where organic material breaks down into methane, or in the recycling bin, where \u2014 unless it&#8217;s correctly sorted \u2014 it contaminates the entire load.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;People might think they&#8217;re doing the right thing, but I&#8217;m pretty sure a lot of it&#8217;s going to landfill,&#8221; Mr Watters said.<\/p>\n<p>Market waste all goes to waste<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Capital Region Farmers Market manager Sarah Power said dealing with the waste was a complicated puzzle for vendors, customers and management alike.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with light hair pulled into a ponytail stands in a warehouse surrounded by market stalls.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/37907291b020f028850725c0838cdc56.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Sarah Power says all the vendors at the Capital Region Farmers Market are eager to figure out the market&#8217;s waste management. (ABC News: Adam Kennedy)<\/p>\n<p>Good intentions, wrong bin<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Watters said it was clear that getting rid of single-use petroleum-based plastics was the right first step and reflected genuine environmental intent.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Getting rid of plastic is obviously the first place you want to start, but then why aren&#8217;t we recovering organic material?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Mr Watters said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He pointed to what he sees as a golden, but currently untapped, opportunity to compost waste at scale in the ACT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You need a mix of carbon and nitrogen to successfully compost,&#8221; Mr Watters said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We have a great opportunity here, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-08-31\/act-food-and-garden-organics-collection-pilot-expands-delayed\/104293756\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104293756\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the FOGO [Food Organics and Garden Organics] trial<\/a> will be getting a lot of nitrogen material.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A Food Organics and Garden Organics collection kitchen caddy.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/4499bcd4d8c7ba48a1449f4ca43c0c1f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The FOGO trial provides households with a kitchen caddy and liners to store their scraps, to be picked up and recycled into a nutrient-rich compost. (ABC News: Jostina Basta)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You can combine the two and then you have a facility that can handle commercial quantities of carbon-rich material and stuff that needs to be commercially composted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not hard. It just takes a bit of thinking and a bit of effort.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As he left the market, Mr Watters put the compostable plates, cutlery and BioCup into the red-lidded landfill bin.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t have a compost bin so this one&#8217;s having to go in the too-hard basket. Sorry planet.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Green packaging not always compostable<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a recent social media post, the ACT government said compostable packaging did not belong in recycling or green waste, but instead should go in the general waste bin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Our recycling sorting facility doesn&#8217;t process compostable items, and many need specialised commercial composting conditions to break down properly,&#8221; ACT City Services wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The ACT government did not respond to direct questions about the issue, but in a previous statement said while some packaging may look fully compostable, not all of it was due to waterproof and non-stick coatings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Food waste is highly valuable for compost, if not contaminated with other materials,&#8221; an ACT government spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Unfortunately, some fibre-based packaging labelled as compostable can cause issues in composting facilities.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two stacks of paper plates on a bench in an industrial kitchen.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/dc47f96c5b1cf472ce24213084f2cf6b.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Some packaging labelled as compostable contains additives to make it grease and water-resistant, meaning it cannot be composted safely. (ABC News: Lish Fejer)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Watters says it is simple to make the process full circle.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s simple \u2014 only organic material at an event. Then no-one needs to think and all of that material is composted.
