We honor him tonight as a musician and poet and as an activist and a patriot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">During the pair\u2019s discussion, they touched on the current divisive political climate and Springsteen\u2019s most recent protest tour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI don\u2019t even really consider myself an activist,\u201d Bruce said at one point.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m a little embarrassed to get this award tonight cause I feel like at best I\u2019m a concerned citizen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He added, \u201cWhat do I do, you know,\u00a0 I sing my songs, I say a few things and wish for the best.&#8221; &#8220;There\u2019s so many people \u2026 who do so much more than I do,\u201d he noted, pointing to Bono as one of them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a lighter moment, Bono talked about trying to get Springsteen to let them use his 2008 song \u201cGirls in Their Summer Clothes\u201d for a Gap ad tied to Bono\u2019s (RED) campaign, with Bruce turning him down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThat was a big mistake,\u201d Springsteen said. \u201cThat was just a song that, I love that song. Damn it, I still think back: \u2018Bono asked you to put this thing on a commercial on television.\u2019 I should have f***** done it! People would hear it like a hit, you know? So I have to apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The afternoon ended with Patti Smith, backed by Tony Shanahan, performing \u201cPeaceable Kingdom,\u201d with a snippet of \u201cPeople Have the Power.\u201d\u00a0 Then Springsteen and Bono joined them for a full rendition of \u201cPeople Have the Power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Springsteen wrapped the event with a solo acoustic performance of his\u00a02012 track \u201cLand of Hope and Dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Copyright \u00a9 2026, ABC Audio.
