A more extended pause would be associated with a smaller overall hiking cycle,&#8221; Ellis said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Inflation is still running above the RBA&#8217;s 2 to 3 per cent target. Headline inflation eased to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/inflation-drops-rate-pain-remains-013212324.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:4.2 per cent in April;cpos:14;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkPosition&quot;:&quot;14&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yPosition&quot;:&quot;1&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;4.2 per cent in April&quot;,&quot;yHasCommerce&quot;:false}\" target=\"_blank\">4.2 per cent in April<\/a>, down from 4.6 per cent, while trimmed mean inflation ticked up to 3.4 per cent, from 3.3 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Westpac expects headline inflation will peak at 4.7 per cent in the fourth quarter and trimmed mean inflation will peak at 3.8 per cent in the third quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">It then expects &#8220;significant pass-through from higher fuel costs into some other prices&#8221;, which would give the RBA an upside surprise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">AMP is also expecting the RBA to retain a &#8220;mild&#8221; tightening bias, given concerns about inflation remaining above target for too long.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">&#8220;Underlying inflation is still trending up with business surveys and the stronger than expected award wage rise this year warn of ongoing cost and price pressures, posing a high risk that inflation expectations will move higher,&#8221; AMP chief economist Shane Oliver said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">&#8220;As such we are continuing to allow for a further rise in interest rates with the next hike likely to come in August.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>     June hold widely expected   <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Nearly all experts and economists surveyed by Finder expect the RBA will hold the cash rate on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">But 55 per cent expect at least one more hike before the end of the year, with 62 per cent seeing it coming as soon as August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/australia-economy-officially-hits-skids-013413553.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:15;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Australian economy;cpos:15;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkPosition&quot;:&quot;15&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yPosition&quot;:&quot;1&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Australian economy&quot;,&quot;yHasCommerce&quot;:false}\" target=\"_blank\">Australian economy<\/a> rose just 0.3 per cent in the March quarter, down from 0.9 per cent recorded in the previous quarter.
