You get fearful. Sunday, he checked out swells at Tourmaline Surf Park where he offered lessons, Pacific Beach, Calif., June 14, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The National Weather Service says waves could reach up to 7 feet this week.<\/p>\n<p>For experienced surfers, the warning is a reminder that even seasoned athletes have to respect the power of the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Burgos, a professional surfer from Ecuador who trains with Baquerizo, said panic is often the biggest mistake people make when caught in a rip current.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people get scared or they get impatient,\u201d Burgos said through a translation. \u201cBut that\u2019s something they definitely should not do.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>You start getting out of breath. That\u2019s the time you have to calm down and make smart decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Roberto Baquerizo, Professional Surf Coach<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Experienced surfer Katherine Austin said surviving challenging conditions requires constant focus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t slack off when you\u2019ve got a slab of freezing cold green water coming at you,\u201d Austin told NBC 7. \u201cYou don\u2019t think about how tired you are. You paddle faster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>San Diego lifeguards stress that swimmers caught in a rip current should not attempt to swim directly against it.
