\u201cWhen I was leaving \u2018General Hospital,\u2019 Gloria Monty, who was the producer, she didn\u2019t want me to go, and I wanted to be funny,\u201d the actor recalled in an archival clip from Joseph Sibilia\u2019s \u201cFriars Club Podcast,\u201d which was recently re-broadcast on\u00a0\u201cNostalgia Tonight with Joe Sibilia.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted to be on\u00a0a sitcom, like a Garry Marshall show,\u201d said Stamos, now 62. \u201cAnd she took me out to [famed restaurant] Le Dome here in Hollywood to try to convince me to stay on the show.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stamos described himself as \u201ca very innocent kid\u201d who \u201cloved\u201d the series but was eager to show off his comedic chops.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe was like, \u2018Well, why do you want to leave my show, dear?\u2019\u201d Stamos recalled. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018Well, Gloria, I want to be funny.\u2019 She\u2019s like, \u2018You want to be funny.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

During their conversation, Monty spotted Dean Martin eating alone. She brought Stamos over and introduced him to Martin.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe said, \u2018Mr. Martin, this is the star of my show, \u2018General Hospital.\u2019 And he wants to leave the show. He wants to be funny. Now, will you tell him about loyalty and about sticking where you\u2019re at?’\u201d said Stamos.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was pretty old by this time, and he was sitting by himself,\u201d said Stamos. \u201cThat was a trick of his. He would have a table set for two, but nobody was coming [for] the other [seat]. He just liked to be alone.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe said, \u2018Tell him not to leave, Mr. Martin.\u2019 And he looked at me, and he said, \u2018Run.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Stamos ended up moving on to the CBS sitcom \u201cDreams\u201d in 1984. Then, from 1986 to 1987, he starred in the NBC sitcom \u201cYou Again?\u201d before landing on \u201cFull House\u201d<\/a> later that year.
