A convicted murderer serving time at State Correctional Institution at Dallas will face assault charges after punching a correctional officer who earlier this year was cleared of allegations that he facilitated a violent inmate-on-inmate assault, according to state police.<\/p>\n
Dominique Baines, 34, is accused of assaulting Correctional Officer Khalil Lewis, 30, on the afternoon of May 20, troopers said.<\/p>\n
According to police, Baines was being escorted to the Jackson Twp. prison\u2019s restrictive housing unit due to misconduct when Lewis gave him an order and Baines grew combative. Surveillance footage showed Baines punching Lewis in the body multiple times, police said.<\/p>\n
Charges of assault by a prisoner resulting in minor injuries were pending against Baines, troopers said.<\/p>\n
Baines is serving up to 60 years in state prison for third-degree murder and related charges out of Dauphin County, according to court records. The Patriot-News reported that Baines shot a Harrisburg man during an argument over a $40 debt on May 16, 2015.<\/p>\n
Lewis previously made headlines when he was tried earlier this year for allegedly conspiring with another correctional officer, Joseph Tilletski, to allow a violent inmate-on-inmate assault to take place on July 24, 2024.<\/p>\n
The cases against both correctional officers, however, ended in their favor.<\/p>\n
Tilletski, who was represented by defense attorney Michael I. Butera, saw his case go before a jury in December before he was found not guilty on all charges.<\/p>\n
The case against Lewis did not even make it to a jury deliberation room. After hearing the prosecution\u2019s evidence, Luzerne County Judge David W. Lupas granted a motion by defense attorney Theron J.
