\n\tTurns out, Amanda Seyfried<\/a>\u2018s viral cover of Joni Mitchell\u2019s \u201cCalifornia\u201d<\/a> on \u201cThe Tonight Show\u201d wasn\u2019t pure coincidence \u2014 the Oscar-nominated actor was once attached to play the singer-songwriter in a biopic.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an interview with British GQ<\/a>, Seyfried revealed that she learned to play Mitchell\u2019s \u201cBlue\u201d album on dulcimer, piano and guitar during the COVID-19 pandemic in preparation for a biopic. \u201cIt was a movie about her and [manager] Elliot Roberts,\u201d she told British GQ. \u201cThen he died \u2013 but not before I met him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe met Mitchell, too, who invited Seyfried to her L.A. home for a steak dinner. The two ended up listening to \u201cBlue\u201d together. \u201cI sat on the floor petting one of the dogs. She told me a lot of stories,\u201d Seyfried said. \u201cShe\u2019s like, \u2018We\u2019ll put on the album and light a fire.\u2019 After we listened to the album, she\u2019s like, \u2018It\u2019s sparse, isn\u2019t it?\u2019\u201d Seyfried responded: \u201cIt\u2019s perfect!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSeyfried also learned the Mitchell classics \u201cBoth Sides Now\u201d and \u201cThe Circle Game,\u201d but the project didn\u2019t end up working out. Still, Seyfried is proud of the musical accomplishment. \u201cThe day that I finished learning the last song on the album, \u2018[The Last Time I Saw] Richard\u2019, I fucking wept,\u201d Seyfried said. \u201cI felt like a bona fide musician, like I belong here. I felt like I had put my own flag on the top of the mountain. Because it was a fucking mountain, I tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAlmost Famous\u201d helmer Cameron Crowe is now directing a different Mitchell biopic, reportedly set to star Anya Taylor-Joy and Meryl Streep as younger and older versions of the singer. \u201cApparently a lot of people reached out to Cameron Crowe and were like, \u2018What the fuck are you doing, dude?\u2019\u201d Seyfried told British GQ. \u201cI don\u2019t know what he said, but from my knowledge, his version is, she\u2019s really young and then she\u2019s older.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter her \u201cCalifornia\u201d cover went viral in March 2025, Seyfried told Variety <\/a>that it wasn\u2019t her taking a shot to star in Crowe\u2019s biopic. \u201cIt was not an audition,\u201d she said. \u201cIn fact, I didn\u2019t even consider that, which is funny. What I know about that project is that I\u2019m very, very much aged-out of [playing] young Joni.\u201d<\/p>\n
