but said\u00a0 &#8220;in a move that was less surprising to us than to some in the market, it explicitly signalled that further hikes remain on the table&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The former RBA assistant governor said the final line of the board&#8217;s statement about being willing to increase the cash rate further if required, which was repeated by Ms Bullock in her press conference, was &#8220;unusual&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It suggests that the [monetary policy board] wanted to hose down recent speculation that they are done hiking rates,&#8221; Duncan<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">I interrupt this press conference coverage, <b>Duncan, <\/b>to tell you the <b>ASX 200 remains flat <\/b>\u2014 up 0.1 point heading into the close.<\/p>\n<p>Tue 16 Jun 2026 at 3:57pm<\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP Timestamp_print__cHBIl Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx Typography_letterSpacedSm__V8kil\" data-component=\"PrintTimestamp\">Tue 16 Jun 2026 at 3:57pm<\/p>\n<p>Are forecasters mistaken in calling rate cuts next?<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/lcimg-38467754-a5e6-4c2e-97bd-ca15b178ac9c.jpeg\" alt=\"Stephanie Chalmers profile image\" class=\"Avatar_avatarImage__f1Jjg\" style=\"display:none\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As we&#8217;ve been reporting in the lead up to today&#8217;s on hold decision, several major economics teams have changed the forecasts for rates from here in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">For example, NAB is among those now seeing the next move for the cash rate as down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Market pricing for further rate hikes has also eased.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">RBA governor <b>Michele Bullock<\/b>\u00a0is asked if financial markets are getting it wrong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a bit of a split here I think amongst the economists. I think some are calling for cuts but not till next year. So it&#8217;s not imminent. Some are still thinking that there&#8217;s a rate rise,&#8221; Ms Bullock notes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She says economists do differ in their interpretation of data and how much weight they put on particular indicators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The governor notes that financial market pricing shifted in reaction to monthly CPI and unemployment numbers, but described them as volatile.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"Blockquote_blockquote__YVWQm ContentAlignment_marginBottom__4H_6E ContentAlignment_overflowAuto__c1_IL\" data-component=\"Blockquote\">\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t be jumping on those numbers quite so firmly. I think we do need to wait.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The other point I would make is that underlying inflation actually is pretty much dead on where we thought it would be\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So I think the rates market are doing their best to interpret what they think is coming for the economy and what we will do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">:I guess what I&#8217;m saying is I can&#8217;t rule out that if inflation doesn&#8217;t respond in the way we expect it to do, then we might have to do more. This is the wage rises for the people at the very lowest incomes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This is the people who are the most vulnerable and the most affected by inflation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said it <b>probably would mean a &#8220;little bit&#8221; of an upward revision to wages forecasts<\/b>, but notes those forecasts <b>see the labour market easing, which will put downward pressure on wages overall<\/b>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"Blockquote_blockquote__YVWQm ContentAlignment_marginBottom__4H_6E ContentAlignment_overflowAuto__c1_IL\" data-component=\"Blockquote\">\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It also reminds me again why it&#8217;s really important we get inflation down because even that wage rise probably doesn&#8217;t get them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They still don&#8217;t get a real wage rise over a period of years.
