{"id":872096,"date":"2026-06-16T22:07:20","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T22:07:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/872096\/"},"modified":"2026-06-16T22:07:20","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T22:07:20","slug":"new-york-bar-associations-push-attorneys-to-take-on-pro-bono-work-to-protect-the-rule-of-law-under-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/872096\/","title":{"rendered":"New York bar associations push attorneys to take on pro-bono work to protect the rule of law under Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Roughly 100 attorneys and judges gathered Tuesday in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/law\/nyc-bar-associations-rally-rule-of-law-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Foley Square<\/a> for a rally to protect the rule of law under the Trump administration, and a handful of New York bar associations pushed legal professionals to step up to take on pro-bono work defending immigrants, federal workers and voting rights.<\/p>\n<p>Surrounded by Manhattan\u2019s federal, Supreme Criminal and Supreme Civil Courts, New York bar association leaders, high-profile attorneys and judges urged the city\u2019s legal corps to sign up to work for legal aid groups offering pro-bono counsel to those who need it and to push back against the Trump administration\u2019s attacks on federal judges and legal precedent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really want lawyers to use their skills and experience to help fight back against the incursions on the rule of law,\u201d said Ronald Minkoff, the president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycla.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York County Lawyers Association<\/a>. \u201cWe want lawyers not just to stand and listen and say \u2018It can\u2019t happen here.\u2019 We want them to get working, to get involved, to make their voices heard, and use their skills in a positive way. It\u2019s the lawyers that are actually fighting back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137854414\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/DSC_8596.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" title=\"New York bar associations push attorneys to take on pro-bono work to protect the rule of law under Trump 2\"  \/>Minkoff in Foley Square.Photo by Ramy Mahmou<\/p>\n<p>Minkoff\u2019s organization held the event alongside the New York City Bar Association, the New York Council of Defense Lawyers, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/law\/metropolitan-black-bar-association-gala-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Metropolitan Black Bar Association<\/a>, who collectively welcomed a range of speakers to encourage attorneys to lend their skills to the fight to keep the rule of law alive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook around. Something is not right in our country right now,\u201d said Asha Smith, the treasurer for the New York County Lawyers Association. \u201cThe rules we thought were solid feel like they\u2019re shifting under our feet. People are scared, scared to speak up, scared of what comes next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137854410\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/DSC_8509.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" title=\"New York bar associations push attorneys to take on pro-bono work to protect the rule of law under Trump 3\"  \/>Attorneys re-take the attorney\u2019s oath in Foley Square Tuesday at the rule of law rally.<\/p>\n<p>She encouraged attorneys to remember that the country was founded on attorneys pushing the law forward to create a more just world by taking on difficult and dangerous cases, such as those in the Jim Crow South.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis country has never moved forward because things were easy. It moved forward because somebody decided they\u2019d rather be brave than comfortable, and that job lands on lawyers in a special way,\u201d Smith said. \u201cWhen the powerful want to bend the rules, lawyers are the ones who stand in the doorway and say No, not like this.\u2019 When somebody\u2019s rights are getting trampled, lawyers are the ones who know the words to fight back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137854403\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/DSC_8016.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" title=\"New York bar associations push attorneys to take on pro-bono work to protect the rule of law under Trump 4\"  \/>Juval Scott, the executive director of Bronx Defenders, speaks to a crowd.Ramy Mahmoud<\/p>\n<p>Former U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin highlighted the important role judges are playing in the fight, urging attorneys to push back against the death threats federal judges who don\u2019t bend to the Trump administration\u2019s whims have been receiving.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudges have been about the only guardrails constraining the many illegal and unconstitutional actions from this administration, but judges are under attack. They are threatened with impeachment. They are called traitors, left-wing lunatics, wild-eyed radicals, crooked monsters, USA-hating,\u201d Scheindlin said. \u201cThis is totally unacceptable. Make no mistake, it is meant to intimidate judges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137854406\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/DSC_8189.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" title=\"New York bar associations push attorneys to take on pro-bono work to protect the rule of law under Trump 5\"  \/>Scheindlin encourages attorneys to use their skills to stand up for the rule of law.Ramy Mahmoud<\/p>\n<p>Many speakers concluded by saying attacks the Trump administration has levied against the rule of law, such as threatening and firing federal judges who rule against it, issuing executive orders compelling firms to provide the administration with pro-bono counsel, and violating precedent by detaining immigrants in courthouses who are showing up to their hearings, are typical actions of fascist administrations that need to be pushed back against.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137854412\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/DSC_8546.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" title=\"New York bar associations push attorneys to take on pro-bono work to protect the rule of law under Trump 6\"  \/>Lawyers stand together in support of the rule of law.Ramy Mahmoud<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen the playbook before. We\u2019ve seen how this happens overseas,\u201d said Steven Cash, a former national security official and executive director of the rule of law advocacy group Steady State. \u201cThe attack on democracy by a rising autocrat always plays out the same. Play number one is attack on the rule of law, and most importantly, an attack on the lawyers. You embody that rule of law, and because of that, you are what an autocrat fears. You resist the attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have seen the transformation of the justice systems into instruments of fear, and we have seen what happens when the public shrugs and says it can\u2019t happen here,\u201d Cash continued. \u201cIt can happen here, and that is why this moment matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137854404\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/DSC_8027.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" title=\"New York bar associations push attorneys to take on pro-bono work to protect the rule of law under Trump 7\"  \/>Steven Cash encourages attorneys to take attacks on the rule of law seriously.Ramy Mahmoud<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycbar.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York City Bar Association<\/a> President Matthew Diller echoed Cash\u2019s calls for attorneys to take what\u2019s going on seriously.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not in normal times.
