SanDisk Corporation, the Western Digital-owned American multinational computer semiconductor company, just revealed the price for its newly announced \u201cOptimus GX PRO\u201d line of SSDs, and the 8TB heatsink version is going to set you back a whopping $3,828.99 at full price\u2014a stupidly unreasonable sum that\u2019s almost $3,000 more than the PlayStation 5 Pro itself, the console you\u2019re supposed to slot the bloody the thing into.<\/p>\n

SanDisk announced the new price on its website earlier today via a post on X<\/a> and, based on the reactions on every corner of the internet, absolutely nobody is impressed with its price point. However, surely there\u2019s some kind of niche usage for the new Optimus GX PRO line that justifies this sort of laughably high sum, right?<\/p>\n

Well, if there is, I\u2019m not seeing it, because as users on ResetEra<\/a> have already pointed out, this \u201cnew\u201d model feels insultingly similar to the WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe SSD: a four-year-old SSD created by SanDisk\u2019s parent company, Western Digital. They both share 6,600MB\/s of sequential write performance, 4,800 endurance (TBW), 1200K input\/output operations per second\u2014wait a tic, even the weight and dimensions are exactly the same. Is this literally the same SSD?<\/p>\n

Ok, but if there\u2019s no easily discernible difference between the two SSDs, why the hell does the new Optimus GX PRO cost roughly $700 more than its WB_BLACK counterpart at full price? Who knows, but I\u2019ll tell you something interesting: SanDisk was selling the same WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe SSD 8TB Heatsink model for $579.99 back in November 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Look, I get it; the never-ending need to feed AI datacenters with SSDs and RAM is making storage options more expensive. But when I said back in March that things were only gonna get worse from there<\/a>, even I didn\u2019t think this was gonna get this bad. How is anyone gonna afford to build a modern gaming PC in 2027 without remortgaging their house? Oh, wait\u2014nobody can afford to buy a house anymore.
