Via iStockphoto \/ @caden7376 TikTok<\/a><\/p>\n Signing up for a gym<\/strong> when you\u2019re full of motivation<\/strong> and energy<\/strong> is one thing<\/strong>, while actually packing up your bag<\/strong> and getting ready to work out is another<\/strong>.<\/p>\n For most people, once that motivation runs out, it\u2019s easy to cancel<\/strong>. But for U.S. consumers, things can get a little tricky, as companies often use contracts<\/strong> and cancellation terms<\/strong> that critics describe as deceptive<\/strong>, which make memberships difficult<\/strong> to get out of<\/a>.<\/p>\n One Los Angeles man found this out the hard way when trying to cancel his Equinox<\/strong><\/a> membership.<\/p>\n In his video that got 550,600 views, TikTok creator Caden (@caden7376) explains why he considered taking dramatic measures in order to get out of his membership.<\/p>\n \u201cWhy I almost faked my death to escape Equinox,\u201d he wrote in the video\u2019s on-screen text.<\/p>\n Why Was Canceling His Equinox Membership So Hard?<\/p>\n \u201cSo I literally was debating on faking my death to escape my Equinox membership,\u201d Caden says at the start of the video.<\/p>\n He explains that he signed up for the luxury gym thinking it would push him into a new fitness era.<\/p>\n \u201cI signed up for Equinox, and, mind you, it was $300 a month,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I thought I was gonna be in like my gym, body gym shark\u2026 bulk era.\u201d<\/p>\n For a few days, it seemed like the membership might work. \u201cI literally went like three days in a row,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n Then, according to Caden, the motivation disappeared. \u201cI was fed the f\u2014 up,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n Instead of using the gym the way he imagined, Caden says he started going there just to sit in the sauna or scroll on his phone while walking on the treadmill.<\/p>\n Eventually, he says he was only going once a week.<\/p>\n \u201cSo I was like, \u2018OK, this John isn\u2019t even worth it,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cLet me try and cancel.\u201d<\/p>\n He Says He Signed A Contract<\/p>\n Caden admits he did sign a 12-month contract at Equinox. That meant canceling was not as simple as deciding he didn\u2019t want to go anymore.<\/p>\n \u201cThe only way to get out of it was to die or to move,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n That left him weighing his options. \u201cMy lease here is six months, so I guess I\u2019ll have to die,\u201d he jokes.<\/p>\n Caden says he actually started thinking about how he could get around the membership.<\/p>\n \u201cSo how do I fake my death?\u201d he says. \u201cLike actually considering it.\u201d<\/p>\n But then he landed on the less extreme option.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m just gonna move,\u201d he says. \u201cSo now I\u2019m actually moving to escape Equinox.\u201d<\/p>\n Caden addresses the gym directly.<\/p>\n \u201cEquinox, if you see this, respectfully, disrespectfully, I hope that your company blows up and dies and dies again and then blows up,\u201d he says, jokingly.<\/p>\n Viewers Shared Their Own Gym Cancellation Hacks<\/p>\n In the comments section, viewers shared their own extreme\u2014or at least extremely questionable\u2014ways of getting out of gym memberships.<\/p>\n \u201cI told planet fitness<\/a> i was going to jail,\u201d one user wrote.<\/p>\n Another suggested a more chaotic approach.<\/p>\n \u201cJust steal something from the shop they\u2019ll ban you,\u201d they stated.<\/p>\n One commenter said their friend even got a therapist involved.<\/p>\n \u201cMy friend had her therapist write that she was afraid of mirrors and couldn\u2019t go to the gym,\u201d they shared.<\/p>\n \u201cI literally faked my move to get out of a $700\/mo pilates membership and saw my instructor\/owner at whole foods 2 weeks later LMAOOO,\u201d a fourth shared.<\/p>\n Why Is Canceling A Gym Membership At Equinox So Hard?<\/p>\n On its FAQ page<\/a>, Equinox says members can cancel in-club with a manager, by mail as described in their membership agreement, by emailing Cancellations@Equinox.com, or by logging into their Equinox account.<\/p>\n However, the company also says notice periods vary by state and tells members to review their own membership agreement for the requirements specific to their membership.<\/p>\n According to Redditors posting on r\/EquinoxGyms, canceling seems to only be an issue when members are still in their first year. Users claim<\/a> that when people sign up, Equinox often locks them into a one-year contract. After that, the membership reportedly turns into a month-to-month agreement.<\/p>\n Some Equinox members say, however, that this is not clearly stated upon them signing up. \u201cMy membership advisor never disclosed the one year contract to me when I signed up,\u201d one wrote<\/a>. \u201cShe had me quickly sign everything at the desk and would briefly tell me what I was signing but she never once said the one year contract rule.\u201d<\/p>\n The company has also faced official scrutiny over its cancellation practices. In 2025, the New York Attorney General announced<\/a> a $600,000 settlement with Equinox Group after finding that the company made it hard for New Yorkers to cancel memberships and failed to clearly disclose certain subscription terms.<\/p>\n BroBible has reached out to Equinox via email and Caden via TikTok messages for comment and additional details.<\/p>\n \t\t\t
