ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The NAACP Onslow County Branch is speaking out against two bills being considered by state lawmakers.<\/p>\n
The branch joined the community and NAACP leaders at the State Capitol today to oppose House Bills 1038 and 958.<\/p>\n
The group says the bills could change how Onslow County residents are represented in local government.<\/p>\n
House Bill 1038 would have all Jacksonville voters elect all six city council members, instead of electing representatives from specific districts.<\/p>\n
HB 958 would make several changes to election laws, such as new voting requirements for some voters and changing how ballots are counted and reviewed after elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are here to ensure that the legislative process remains accessible to and representative of the people it affects,\u201d said M. Kenyatta Euring, president of the NAACP Onslow County Branch.<\/p>\n
Euring said the trip to the Capitol aimed to remind lawmakers that people want a say before major changes are made.<\/p>\n
The branch also presented the Onslow Civic Education Initiative to county commissioners.<\/p>\n
That initiative includes a $15,000 investment to help get more residents involved in local government, civic education for students, and military outreach.<\/p>\n
