NEW YORK \u2014 Chicago White Sox ace Davis Martin conceded \u201cthings kind of unraveled pretty quickly\u201d in Tuesday\u2019s 12-2 loss to the New York Yankees.<\/p>\n

Some defensive lapses by Chase Meidroth and Jacob Gonzalez opened the door to a four-run second inning, and Martin never recovered.<\/p>\n

He left after retiring only one batter in the six-run fourth inning of what turned out to be the biggest drubbing the Sox have taken since opening day, when they lost 14-2 to the Milwaukee Brewers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not like this is some random stadium,\u201d Martin said. \u201cThis is New York<\/a>. This is a hard place to play. It\u2019s a great place for us to learn how to play in big-time spots on the road. We have dreams and aspirations of making the playoffs this year, and you don\u2019t play all those games at home. We\u2019ve got to learn how to win on the road. It\u2019s a process. It\u2019s June. Continue to learn and make these adjustments and learn now so we can be ready to go come September or October.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sox infielder Luisangel Acu\u00f1a pitched the eighth inning, lobbing 40 mph curves, including one that Jos\u00e9 Caballero took out for the Yankees\u2019 fourth home run.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, some things in there we have to clean up,\u201d Sox manager Will Venable said.<\/p>\n

Martin (9-3) was charged with nine runs on eight hits and three walks over 3 1\/3 innings, watching his earned run average soar from 2.41 to 3.31. Only three starts ago, Martin had a 2.00 ERA, but stinkers against the Minnesota Twins and Yankees sandwiched a start in which he threw six shutout innings in a win against the Atlanta Braves.<\/p>\n

Venable called Tuesday\u2019s outing \u201can aberration.\u201d Martin said he wasn\u2019t worried about rebounding in his next start.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve done it once before after the Twins outing, and I can do it again,\u201d he said. \u201cThis start by no means defines me or my season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tuesday\u2019s performance, in which he gave up home runs to Spencer Jones, Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt, was by far his worst of the season.<\/p>\n

The Sox offense didn\u2019t help matters. After Andrew Benintendi\u2019s solo home run off Gerrit Cole with two outs in the first, they were held hitless until Tristan Peters<\/a> singled leading off the sixth. By that point it didn\u2019t matter, as the Sox were trailing 11-1.<\/p>\n

The unraveling began in the third when Meidroth couldn\u2019t make a tag at second on a sliding J.C. Escarra, who wound up with a double. Gonzalez then strayed too far to his right to try fielding Anthony Volpe\u2019s grounder to second, leaving Meidroth with no one to throw to at first on an infield hit.<\/p>\n

\u201cLearning experience,\u201d Venable said of Gonzalez, a shortstop still learning to play first base. \u201cHe probably won\u2019t do that again. He\u2019ll learn from it.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Martin couldn\u2019t pick them up. He lost control and the game, giving up a run-scoring single to Cody Bellinger and three walks the rest of the inning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI pride myself in, if guys are going to pick me up, I\u2019ve got to pick them up,\u201d Martin said. \u201cThat\u2019s why the biggest frustration is losing the zone there a little bit, trying to get nit-picky. I looked at (Meidroth) and nodded my head like \u2018I\u2019ve got you,\u2019 and it just didn\u2019t work out tonight. Most nights I feel like I\u2019m going to pick them up. Same with (Gonzalez). It\u2019s just a bad night. Go to sleep. Wake up.
