{"id":872835,"date":"2026-06-17T05:34:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T05:34:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/872835\/"},"modified":"2026-06-17T05:34:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T05:34:14","slug":"san-antonio-tempts-toyota-with-a-142-8m-incentive-package","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/872835\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio tempts Toyota with a $142.8M incentive package"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 The City of San Antonio is trying to lock down a $2 billion expansion of the Toyota plant with a nine-figure bundle of incentives at the same time it tries to close a similarly sized hole in its own budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The San Antonio City Council will vote Thursday on $122.1 million worth of tax breaks, job training grants, fee waivers and infrastructure improvements as well as recommending them for another $20.7 million worth of help from the city\u2019s power and water utilities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">In return, it hopes to bring in thousands of good-paying jobs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Toyota, which opened its South Side plant where it currently assembles the Tundra and Sequoia in 2006, is deciding where to place a new vehicle assembly line in a \u201chighly competitive\u201d selection process. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The company has not said what model the new line would produce or what other locations it\u2019s considering. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The city\u2019s proposed incentives include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 etvbxt font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Stack-vJ7SwH7U__StackBase-sc-1m5bkhd-0 evEXvX dsnUCb\">\n<p>A 10-year property tax break worth an estimated<b> $88.1 million<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Stack-vJ7SwH7U__StackBase-sc-1m5bkhd-0 evEXvX dsnUCb\">\n<p>Road and intersection improvements with <b>$24.5 million<\/b> of city money<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Stack-vJ7SwH7U__StackBase-sc-1m5bkhd-0 evEXvX dsnUCb\">\n<p>Worker training grants worth up to <b>$9 million<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Stack-vJ7SwH7U__StackBase-sc-1m5bkhd-0 evEXvX dsnUCb\">\n<p>City fee waivers worth up to <b>$500,000<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The city would also endorse Toyota for a CPS Energy program that could reduce the company\u2019s electric rates, worth <b>$16.3 million<\/b>, and recommend it for <b>$4.5 million<\/b> worth of San Antonio Water System fee waivers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">But on the same day council members vote on the incentive package, they\u2019ll also receive a briefing on a \u201ctrial\u201d budget that is expected to include insight on how the city can close a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2026\/05\/23\/how-much-could-a-san-antonio-tax-hike-cost-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$131 million budget<\/a> deficit projected for the 2028 fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Belinda Rom\u00e1n, an associate professor of economics at St. Mary\u2019s University, told KSAT the Toyota expansion would be a \u201csignificant\u2019\u201d project and that the city would have already done its analyses, \u201cSo, yes, they can afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThe question is going to be: Does it play out the way it looks like on paper?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">As part of the deal, Toyota would create 2,000 full-time jobs earning at the least the county\u2019s average annual wage \u2014 currently $32.46 per hour.
