{"id":873094,"date":"2026-06-17T08:17:19","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T08:17:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/873094\/"},"modified":"2026-06-17T08:17:19","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T08:17:19","slug":"san-antonios-new-lgbtq-youth-transitional-housing-center-will-be-first-of-its-kind-in-texas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/873094\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio\u2019s new LGBTQ+ youth transitional housing center will be first of its kind in Texas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO <\/strong> \u2013 A new transitional supportive housing community for LGBTQ+ youth is coming to the West Side of San Antonio and will be the first of its kind in the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/thriveyouthcenter.org\/site-not-available\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Thrive Youth Center<\/a> and the San Antonio Housing Trust Foundation announced their agreement during Pride Month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Advocates said this is a crucial missing piece for LGBTQ+ youth who experience homelessness 120% more often than their non-LGBTQ+ peers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cForty percent of our local homeless youth identify as LGBTQ+,\u201d Thrive Executive Director Justin Holley said. \u201cThey\u2019re running away, they\u2019re not being in affirming spaces, they\u2019re being rejected from their families, and they don\u2019t know where to go, so they end up on the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Thrive Youth Center already runs the LGBTQ+ youth emergency shelter at Haven for Hope, but soon they will be able to offer a full housing community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">It will be called Thrive Vecindad, or neighborhood, and will house 25 youth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The property on Buena Vista on the West Side currently consists of two historic homes that will be fixed up, and then Thrive will build two more structures. One of the structures will be a community center building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThree of the homes will be transitional supportive housing, so they\u2019ll be individual bedrooms with shared living rooms and bathrooms,\u201d Holley said. \u201cThen one community space for services like a community kitchen, a community library where they can come down and be in community and learn from each other, and then those services that they might need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The youth will be able to stay for two to three years and receive counseling, case work, and support with education, work, and permanent housing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Mariana Lara Lozada, 21, who is currently living at the Thrive shelter at Haven for Hope, said the biggest piece of this new project will be the sense of community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWe will feel more comfortable living in that part of the community and being able to use the amenities and have more chance of freedom that we don\u2019t experience as much in the shelter,\u201d Lara Lozada said. \u201dJust give us the opportunity to be able to say like, \u2018Yeah, we\u2019re not homeless anymore because we\u2019re not in the shelter.
