{"id":8732,"date":"2025-06-23T19:01:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T19:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/8732\/"},"modified":"2025-06-23T19:01:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T19:01:10","slug":"i-nearly-died-on-a-flight-when-i-collapsed-using-the-loo-a-common-pill-created-the-perfect-storm-but-i-had-no-idea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/8732\/","title":{"rendered":"I nearly died on a flight when I collapsed using the loo &#8211; a common pill created the &#8216;perfect storm&#8217; but I had no idea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A WOMAN has cautioned holidaymakers after she collapsed and almost died when going to the toilet on a flight.<\/p>\n<p>Emily Jansson, 34, had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/sleep\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asleep<\/a> for 10 hours while on a 13-hour flight from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/where\/toronto\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/where\/canada\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canada<\/a>, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/where\/dubai\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dubai<\/a> International Airport on February 5, 2025.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Woman in hospital gown with a large bruise around her eye.\" height=\"960\" width=\"720\" data-credit=\"SWNS\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2025-started-experiencing-weird-chest-1004691591.jpg\" data-caption=\"Emily Jansson at Rashid Hospital Dubai after collapsing on a 13-hour flight\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2025-started-experiencing-weird-chest-1004691591.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>9<\/p>\n<p>Emily Jansson at Rashid Hospital Dubai after collapsing on a 13-hour flightCredit: SWNS<a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Woman with two children.\" height=\"960\" width=\"893\" data-credit=\"SWNS\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2025-started-experiencing-weird-chest-1004908346.jpg\" data-caption=\"The mum-of-two was told her contraceptive pill had caused a blood clot\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2025-started-experiencing-weird-chest-1004908346.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>9<\/p>\n<p>The mum-of-two was told her contraceptive pill had caused a blood clotCredit: SWNS<\/p>\n<p>The mum-of-two got up for the first time to use the bathroom when she started experiencing &#8220;weird chest pains&#8221; and &#8220;odd coughs&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Waiting outside the toilet door, Emily suddenly &#8220;blacked out&#8221; and fell unconscious for &#8220;five minutes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She struck her head on the way down, bruising her eye and arm and from then on, &#8220;struggled to remember anything&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>The plane landed two and a half hours later, and Emily was transported to Rashid Hospital Dubai.<\/p>\n<p>A CT and angiogram confirmed she had a bilateral saddle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/10985315\/chest-pain-cough-signs-pulmonary-embolism-kill-minutes\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pulmonary embolism<\/a> &#8211; a large <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/35422033\/thought-aching-leg-working-home-blood-clots-contraceptive-pill\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blood clot<\/a> stuck in the main pulmonary artery that branches off into a Y-shape to go into each lung.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the length of time to get to the hospital, doctors told her that &#8220;it was essentially a miracle&#8221; that she was still alive, and she was hospitalised for six days for treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Emily said she later learned that several factors were &#8220;detrimental&#8221; to her health during the flight, which was for a girl&#8217;s holiday.<\/p>\n<p>The IT worker, from Kingston, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/where\/ontario\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ontario<\/a>, said: &#8220;Apparently, oestrogen birth control, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/travel\/8589452\/flight-compression-socks-wearing-wrong\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">compression stockings<\/a>, and sitting down for 10 hours was the perfect storm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Emily was taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/contraception-birth-control\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">birth control<\/a> called Zamine. The combined pill contains progestogen and oestrogen &#8211; which is known to increase the risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/24167936\/common-cold-blood-clot-disorder\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blood clots<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She is currently on blood-thinning anticoagulant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/medicines-vitamins-vaccines\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">medication<\/a> &#8211; to prevent further clots &#8211; for a minimum of six months.<\/p>\n<p>Mum reveals terrifying photo of red mark travelling up thigh that turned out to be blood clot caused by pill <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was restricting my body&#8217;s blood flow, which contributed to my clot developing,&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had little idea about the danger I was in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After taking oestrogen birth control for six years consistently, I didn&#8217;t know my risk of blood clots was so high.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m an active person with the heart of an athlete from my intense cardio workouts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She added: &#8220;It&#8217;s important that people know about the risks of this particular birth control, Zamine, and the safety when flying.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re on a long-haul flight, make sure you move around and let your body breathe.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was fortunate that there was a doctor on board and some very amazing, competent flight attendants.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They essentially saved my life when it shouldn&#8217;t have been possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"article__quote\">\n<p>I was vomiting profusely and sweating. I had no idea what was happening, but I was fairly sure this was a near-death experience<\/p>\n<p>Emily Jansson<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Emily had been seated for 10 hours before standing up to use the bathroom, prompting her to let out three &#8220;feeble coughs&#8221; before collapsing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was waiting for the bathroom and I got this really deep, dull aching pain in my chest out of nowhere,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Suddenly, it was like the lights were on and then off.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had completely blacked out for five minutes and couldn&#8217;t remember anything afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was given an oxygen tank, carried to business class and laid down.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was vomiting profusely and sweating. But like any medication, there are also some potential risks to be aware of. <\/p>\n<p><strong>BENEFITS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/pregnancy-childbirth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pregnancy<\/a>\u00a0prevention\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; the pill is over 99 per cent effective if used correctly every time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Menstrual health\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; the pill can make periods lighter, less painful, and more regular.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Acne<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; the pill can help with acne.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cancer<\/a>\u00a0risk\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; the pill can reduce the risk of ovarian, endometrial and bowel cancer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other health benefits<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; it can also help with symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), endometriosis, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>RISKS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Side effects\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; the pill can cause temporary side effects, such as headaches, nausea, breast tenderness, mood changes, and increased blood pressure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bleeding\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; breakthrough bleeding or changes to your period are common in the first few months.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Serious health conditions<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; the pill has been linked to an increased risk of some serious health conditions, such as blood clots and breast cancer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No protection against\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/sti-sexually-transmitted-infection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">STIs<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; the pill doesn&#8217;t protect you against sexually transmitted infections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Source: NHS<\/p>\n<p>Emily remained in the hospital for six days and was treated with thrombolytic therapy and clot-busting medication.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were lots of different specialists coming to see me and they kept asking what birth control I was on,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Doctors said I was close to death because it was making me go into cardiac arrest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had no idea how much danger I was in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Emily stayed with her friend in Dubai for three weeks. She has since stopped taking birth control.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wish I had been told all of this before taking the pill,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s not enough awareness out there about the risk of oestrogen birth control. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I never knew how important it was to get up and move on long-haul journeys, but now I do.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m still recovering from this episode and my body has been through a lot. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But I&#8217;m hopeful my experience can educate people about the risks of blood clots, and act as a reminder that life is so precious very serious and need to be treated quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms depend on the location, but include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Throbbing or cramping pain<\/li>\n<li>Swelling<\/li>\n<li>Redness<\/li>\n<li>Warmth<\/li>\n<li>Sudden breathlessness<\/li>\n<li>Sharp chest pain (which may be worse when you breathe in)<\/li>\n<li>A
