A visionary $350 million mixed-use development near the University of Texas at San Antonio campus might give La Cantera a run for its money. The Merc<\/a>, a 112-acre live-play district, has announced its next wave of tenants, including a new concept from a beloved local sushi restaurant.<\/p>\n

Leading the charge will be a brand-new concept from the family behind Wild Goji<\/a>, one of the first restaurants to bring revolving sushi to Alamo City. The owners are still keeping mum about most of the details, but the spot is known for both its affordable bento boxes and decadent rolls topped with filet mignon, tempura lobster, and caviar.<\/p>\n

The development will also house San Antonio\u2019s first location of Florida-based chain Pure Green<\/a>. The growing franchise is known for its superfood smoothies, a\u00e7ai and pitaya bowls, toasts, and cold-pressed juices. The shop is particularly attuned to contemporary college life, pouring wellness-focused functional beverages rather than typical frat-house booze.<\/p>\n

The restaurants will join a new outpost of Frenchie\u2019s Modern Nail Care<\/a> and new locations of two national favorites. As CultureMap previously reported, Canadian brunch caf\u00e9 P\u00fcr & Simple<\/a> and fast-casual plate lunch purveyors Hawaiian Bros Island Grill<\/a> will also land at the development.<\/p>\n

Although The Merc won\u2019t have a tony resort or the luxury retailers of La Cantera, it will be tailored to the way students and young professionals actually live. The project will be anchored by Park Golf<\/a>, a nine-hole, par-three course next to the trailhead at Leon Creek Greenway. The grounds will be built for sociability, offering a putting punchbowl, a beer garden, food trucks, and flexible green space for live music and movie nights.<\/p>\n

According to a release, Park Golf and the first wave of retail tenants are on track for a 2027 opening. Eventually, the ambitious build will also include 1,600 apartments, 200,000 square feet of retail and commercial space, and outdoor amenities including pickleball and an ice house.<\/p>\n

Project planners hope that The Merc will create a new walkable community \u2014 one that might keep residents from venturing into downtown on weekends.<\/p>\n
