{"id":87718,"date":"2025-07-24T04:24:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-24T04:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/87718\/"},"modified":"2025-07-24T04:24:10","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T04:24:10","slug":"trump-to-visit-federal-reserve-in-person-after-threatening-to-fire-chair-powell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/87718\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump to visit Federal Reserve in person after threatening to fire Chair Powell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Frantz | Nathan Howard | Reuters<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> will visit the Federal Reserve on Thursday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White House<\/a> said, escalating his pressure campaign against Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/jay-powell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jerome Powell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first time in nearly two decades that an American president will be making an official trip to the central bank.<\/p>\n<p>American presidents have traditionally respected the independence of the central bank, which is insulated both in law and in practice from the political whims of elected officials.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s\u00a0visit is a remarkable symbolic move on that independence, bringing his drumbeat of criticism over Powell&#8217;s refusal to lower interest rates right to the chairman&#8217;s doorstep.<\/p>\n<p>The White House released a schedule on Wednesday that said Trump would visit the Federal Reserve at 4:00 p.m. ET on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has repeatedly criticized Powell for not cutting interest rates, even floating the idea of firing him, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/19\/unraveling-the-legal-economic-and-market-ramifications-if-trump-tries-to-fire-fed-chair-powell.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legal questions<\/a> over his authority to do so.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think he&#8217;s done a bad job, but he&#8217;s going to be out pretty soon anyway,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/22\/trump-backs-away-from-firing-powell-hes-going-to-be-out-pretty-soon-anyway.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump told reporters<\/a> earlier this week at a White House event.<\/p>\n<p>Trump last week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/16\/trump-powell-fed-fire.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sought opinion from a group of Republican lawmakers<\/a> on firing Powell, before denying he intended to remove the Fed chair. &#8220;We&#8217;re not planning on doing it &#8230; I think it&#8217;s highly unlikely, unless he has to leave for fraud.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Powell has said that his firing is &#8220;not permitted under the law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While former presidents have criticized prior Fed chairs, no president has attempted to fire the top central banker.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CNBC&#8217;s Christina Wilkie contributed to this report.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and U.S. President Donald Trump.
