\n\tElmo<\/a> and Jalen Brunson<\/a> are cool.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe iconic \u201cSesame Street<\/a>\u201d character caught flak from Knicks fans earlier this month for posting a video<\/a> on his official social media account saying, \u201cElmo hopes both teams have fun!\u201d with four basketball emojis, referring to the NBA playoff series between the New York Knicks<\/a> and San Antonio Spurs.<\/p>\n

\n\tElmo\u2019s fairweather message has amassed 27 million views on X<\/a>, where fans roasted the furry red monster for not picking a side and displaying a lack of media literacy<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA rotten individual fueled by resentment, ego, and emotional dysfunction,\u201d one user replied<\/a>. \u201cThey imitate confidence, manipulate for attention, and drag others into their chaos because misery is the only thing they know how to spread. F\u2014kk you elmo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tElmo tried to walk back his comments, writing<\/a>, \u201cKNICKS that last message! Elmo didn\u2019t mean to SPUR you on!\u201d He also told\u00a0E! News<\/a>\u00a0on the red carpet, \u201cElmo has learned that he should not pick favorites for online consumption.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut the backlash didn\u2019t let up. After the Knicks did the impossible<\/a> and defeated the Spurs in Game 5<\/a> on June 13, millions of New Yorkers flooded the streets<\/a> \u2014 and it quickly became clear the win hadn\u2019t exactly repaired the\u00a0\u201cSesame Street\u201d\u00a0star\u2019s reputation. In one especially deranged bit of viral fallout, a video<\/a> circulating online shows a Knicks fan displaying a mock Elmo head on a pike above a cardboard sign reading, \u201cTRAITOR.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe next day, Cookie Monster tried to help repair his friend\u2019s reputation, writing on X<\/a>, \u201cElmo teach me not to eat trophy. Me teach Elmo to pick a team.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tYet it was the even-keeled Brunson who showed Elmo some forgiveness. At the Knicks\u2019 official championship ticker-tape parade on Thursday, Variety filmed<\/a> the team captain holding up and kissing an Elmo plush with a cardboard sign reading, \u201cForgive me PLEASE,\u201d while standing beside the NBA championship trophy on his float.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring an interview<\/a> on \u201cCBS Mornings,\u201d Gayle King asked Brunson why he chose to walk away without saying a word after Spurs star Victor Wembanyama shoved him on what she called \u201ca blatant foul,\u201d and the Knicks captain offered a glimpse into his Mamba mentality that defines his character.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was definitely a spur-of-the-moment thing, but no matter what, you have to understand the moment, what you\u2019re doing, and what your main goal and focus are,\u201d he explained. \u201cI\u2019ve always had the ability to stay even-keeled \u2014 never too high, never too low. That\u2019s what prepared me for that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

If Brunson can move on from Wembanyama \u2014 and Elmo \u2014 maybe it\u2019s time for New York to do the same.<\/p>\n
