The seasonal outdoor pop-up will transform the garden behind the historic venue in Old City into an open-air experience inspired by 18th-century food, drink, and social traditions. Operating Thursday through Sunday throughout the summer, the Garden will bring history to life through interactive programming, elevated hospitality, and a variety of special touches.

The concept draws inspiration from the original City Tavern, established in 1773, which served as a hub for many of America’s founding figures and played a role in the social and political life of the country. The Garden at City Tavern aims to “rekindle the tavern’s tradition” of bringing people together and connecting with Philadelphia’s history.

“Opening the City Tavern courtyard this summer is about more than reopening a space, it’s about restoring a place where history, community, and hospitality meet,” says Steven D. Sims, Superintendent of Independence National Historical Park. “We’re proud to partner with Historic Philadelphia Inc and welcome guests back to this unique setting, bringing new energy, great food and drink, and a renewed sense of connection to one of the city’s most iconic gathering places.”

Daytime “History Maker” experiences here include Colonial games, interactive activities, and historic interpreters portraying real figures from the past. Historic Philadelphia, Inc. will also bring back its popular Independence After Hours experience every Saturday evening throughout the summer. The tour begins at the Independence Visitor Center and continues with a special after-hours visit to Independence Hall, where interpreters portray the authors of the Declaration of Independence. The evening then concludes with celebratory toasts at The Garden at City Tavern.

The Garden’s menu is inspired by the original City Tavern as well. Guests can enjoy a selection of specially crafted ready-to-drink canned cocktails (created exclusively for the experience),like Patriots Punch, Birthday Brew, Liberty Lemonade, and Summer House Seltzer, alongside non-alcoholic options like a Chili Margarita and Old Fashioned Mocktail. The beverage menu also features rotating imported, local craft, and domestic beers and a curated wine selection from Blind Fox Wines.

Food offerings span a Soft Bavarian Pretzel with mustard, Turkey Sandwich, a Veggie Wrap with hummus and chips, and a Charcuterie Board with gluten-free crackers. There are also light bites available, like a Hummus Cup with pita chips and fresh vegetables, Dilly Pickle Bites, Fruit Salad, and Trail Mix. Families can also order up kid-friendly refreshments, including the Lil Pony Punch, a citrus fruit sipper served in a collectible souvenir pony cup.

“Philadelphia’s history is one of its greatest assets. The Garden at City Tavern offers a unique opportunity for guests to gather, connect, and enjoy the city’s rich heritage in a welcoming and vibrant setting,” adds Joe Volpe, Founder of Cescaphe, the Garden’s catering company partner. “We’re thrilled to once again partner with Historic Philadelphia to bring new energy and experiences to such a location so deeply rooted in Philadelphia’s history.”

As a release notes, the launch of The Garden at City Tavern (138 S. 2nd St.) coincides with a season of America 250 celebrations across Philadelphia’s Historic District, including Historic Philadelphia’s storytelling, the Red, White, & Blue To-Do on July 2 featuring the Pomp & Parade, All-American Block Party, and Independence Illumination Drone Show, as well as Flag Day festivities and other commemorative events leading up to the nation’s 250th anniversary.
