{"id":878193,"date":"2026-06-19T12:12:24","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T12:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/878193\/"},"modified":"2026-06-19T12:12:24","modified_gmt":"2026-06-19T12:12:24","slug":"125-million-year-old-crocodile-relative-reveals-its-true-colors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/878193\/","title":{"rendered":"125-Million-Year-Old Crocodile Relative Reveals Its True Colors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Exceptionally preserved skin of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montsecosuchus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Montsecosuchus depereti<\/a>, an extinct crocodylomorph no larger than a house cat that prowled the tropical wetlands of Early Cretaceous Spain, has allowed paleontologists to reconstruct details of its scales, sensory organs and even possible banded markings along its tail.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sci.news\/images\/enlarge13\/image_14858_1e-Montsecosuchus-depereti.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110462\" class=\"wp-image-110462 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image_14858_1-Montsecosuchus-depereti.jpg\" alt=\"The holotype specimen of Montsecosuchus depereti. Image credit: Castillo-Visa et al., doi: 10.1093\/zoolinnean\/zlag076.<\/p>\n<p>The fossilized skeleton of Montsecosuchus depereti was <a href=\"https:\/\/museuciencies.cat\/en\/no-tho-perdis\/montsecosuchus-depereti-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">unearthed<\/a> in 1902 by the engineer and geologist Llu\u00eds Mari\u00e0 Vidal at a quarry in the Noguera region of Catalonia, Spain.<\/p>\n<p>For over a century, the 50-cm-long specimen sat in the collections of the Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrocodylomorpha \u2014 crocodilians and their extinct relatives \u2014 have an extensive fossil record that extends from the Late Triassic to the present day,\u201d said Dr. Oscar Castillo-Visa from the Institut Catal\u00e0 de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont at the Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona and colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNevertheless, fossilized soft tissues (e.g. skin and cartilage) are virtually unknown for most clades, with the exception of the marine thalattosuchians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Using ultraviolet (UV) light, the paleontologists identified and described a variety of cartilaginous and epidermal tissues in Montsecosuchus depereti, making it one of the most complete and oldest preserved skin specimens among all crocodylomorphs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUV light allows us to see details that would otherwise remain completely hidden in the rock,\u201d Dr. Castillo-Visa explained.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sci.news\/images\/enlarge13\/image_14858_2e-Montsecosuchus-depereti.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110463\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-110463 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image_14858_2-Montsecosuchus-depereti.jpg\" alt=\"The holotype specimen of Montsecosuchus depereti under UV light. Image credit: Castillo-Visa et al., doi: 10.1093\/zoolinnean\/zlag076.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that epidermal scales formed discontinuous patches across Montsecosuchus depereti\u2019s arms, thorax, legs, and tail, with the best-preserved skin appearing on the forelimb and thoracic regions.<\/p>\n<p>They also identified what may be integumentary sensory organs \u2014 small, specialized scales on the body\u2019s periphery \u2014 suggesting that such organs first evolved in a restricted form before spreading more widely across the bodies of later crocodilians.<\/p>\n<p>These tiny pits, found in abundance on the faces and bodies of modern species, are exquisitely sensitive to pressure and vibration, helping crocodilians detect prey in murky water. Their origin, it seems, was more modest than previously assumed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn today\u2019s crocodiles, these organs function as receptors for touch and variations in water pressure, and can also respond to thermal and chemical stimuli,\u201d the scientists said.<\/p>\n<p>Preserved cartilaginous tissues in the thoracic region suggest that Montsecosuchus depereti had adaptations for increased respiratory efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>These bony or cartilaginous projections, found today in birds, help stiffen the rib cage and improve the mechanics of breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Their presence in this ancient species hints at a more active, aerobically capable animal than the sluggish stereotype of modern crocodiles might suggest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese traits indicate that, despite being a primitive animal, it was already very well adapted to a semi-aquatic lifestyle,\u201d Dr. Castillo-Visa said.<\/p>\n<p>Montsecosuchus depereti lacked two features characteristic of modern crocodilians: a deep caudal \u2018fin\u2019 and strongly keeled scales on the limbs.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, the animal would have had a somewhat smoother silhouette than the Nile crocodile.<\/p>\n<p>The authors also found something more visually striking: evidence of banded coloration along the tail.<\/p>\n<p>That pattern \u2014 alternating dark and light bands \u2014 is common among living crocodilians and many other reptiles, used for camouflage or species recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing it echoed in a creature from the age of dinosaurs is a small but vivid reminder that evolution is, at times, extraordinarily conservative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the moment we cannot say for sure what color the crocodile\u2019s tail was, but it would be expected that it was not so different from current species, which also show different coloration patterns,\u201d said Dr. Albert Sell\u00e9s, a researcher with the Institut Catal\u00e0 de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont at the Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona and the Museu de La Conca Dell\u00e0.<\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/zoolinnean\/article-abstract\/207\/2\/zlag076\/8707816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">findings<\/a> were published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.<\/p>\n<p>_____<\/p>\n<p>Oscar Castillo-Visa et al. 2026.
