A 48-year-old man died Thursday after he was transported from jail to the hospital to receive care for a pre-existing condition, sheriff\u2019s officials said.<\/p>\n
Travis Hughes was taken from Rock Mountain Detention Facility in Otay Mesa to a local hospital on May 20, sheriff\u2019s homicide Lt. Juan Marquez said. Two weeks later, he was transferred to a second hospital where he received palliative care for a preexisting medical condition.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, sheriff\u2019s officials were notified that Hughes had died at the hospital.<\/p>\n
Hughes was arrested by the San Diego Police Department and facing charges of violation of parole, making criminal threats and providing false identification to a peace officer.<\/p>\n
His next hearing was scheduled for June 25.<\/p>\n
The sheriff\u2019s homicide unit is investigating, as is standard for inmate deaths. It is also being reviewed by the Citizens\u2019 Law Enforcement Review Board, the county\u2019s civilian oversight body.<\/p>\n
