Visitors had the chance to get up close to roughly 80 original costumes from films such as \u201cBlack Panther\u201d and \u201cSinners,\u201d as part of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruthecarter.com\/impact-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design<\/a>\u201d exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>Museum guests also toured the institution\u2019s newest exhibit, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/african-american-museum-philadelphia-ona-judge-presidents-house-exhibit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Who Is Ona Judge?<\/a>\u201d The video installation tells the story of the enslaved woman who escaped from <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/philadelphia-presidents-house-court-ruling-replace-exhibit-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President George Washington\u2019s household<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am hoping that from our exhibitions \u2026 guests will walk away wanting to champion their own stories for freedom, as well as a sense of inspiration that they can do it too,\u201d said Ashley Jordan, the museum\u2019s president and CEO.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-744894\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-06-19-e-lee-ashley-jordan-philadelphia-african-american-museum-juneteenth-block-party-1024x683..jpeg\" alt=\"Ashley Jordan speaking into a microphone on stage.\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"  \/>Ashley Jordan is the President &amp; CEO at the African American Museum in Philadelphia, which hosts a Juneteenth block party outside the museum at 7th and Arch streets.<\/p>\n<p>The museum is the first of its kind funded by a major city. The institution\u2019s anniversary is a significant milestone, Jordan said, because in 1976, there were only a handful of African American museums or cultural sites dedicated to the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifty years later, there\u2019s over 300 sites dedicated to history and culture for African Americans, and we\u2019re just happy to be considered a forerunner in that story,\u201d she said. \u201cWith that legacy, we know that that is an invaluable reputation to have, but we\u2019re looking forward to seeing more institutions like us come forward in other major cities that may go unlooked or overlooked, and we\u2019re just happy to have this opportunity to be an institutional leader.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The museum also marked its 50th anniversary by offering free visits all day.
