Five years ago it was about 4,200.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australia&#8217;s share market has also had an impressive run, notwithstanding some recent weakness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">One US academic has suggested Wall Street and, indeed, global share markets have found &#8220;bliss&#8221;, or a never-ending run of gains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The bliss (big lasting state support) trade is the idea that governments and central banks are loathe to let big companies fail due to the financial stress it brings into the monetary system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The stock market crash of 1929 led to the Great Depression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The stock market crash of 1987, and the subsequent policy response, contributed to the 1992 Australian recession.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Men in shirts and ties shout while standing on a trading floor.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3ab6d1a2d4878adecde8457364c4b6d9.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">About $500 billion was wiped off the New York Stock Exchange on Black Monday, 1987. (Reuters: Brian Snyder)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Gemma Dale, director of nabtrade, says the investment hubris that comes with this has existed for decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There was <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2017-10-19\/black-tuesday-1987-share-crash-three-decades-on\/9053796\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/9053796\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Greenspan put<\/a>, there was a lot of confidence that monetary policy existed to support any kind of volatility where there was meaningful risk to the downside,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And that was a wonderful thing to know as an investor and a trader. The amount of fiscal support that has been provided to the economy, GFC and post has been simply astonishing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Now, some analysts argue, governments and central banks (<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-01-10\/covid-economy-quantitative-easing-paying-it-back\/100744158\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/100744158\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">via money printing<\/a>) again stand ready to support big companies if they run into financial trouble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I think that is problematic to the extent that you&#8217;ve almost removed [the idea of] moral hazard. And that&#8217;s an issue,&#8221; Dale said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Put another way, she believes there&#8217;s a distinct lack of morals among US corporations at present.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Moral hazard was once something to be avoided. (Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>Mega IPOs<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This reckless, caution-to-the-wind investing style has, some could argue, helped <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-12\/spacex-ipo-elon-musk-stock-market-launch\/106793326\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106793326\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX launch onto the stock market<\/a> as a record-breaking initial public offering.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-12\/space-x-elon-musk-shares-australian-super-funds\/106782826\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How you came to be aboard SpaceX<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">If your superannuation is managed by any of Australia&#8217;s big superannuation funds, chances are you&#8217;re about to become a highly valued financial backer to Elon Musk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The argument has been that Musk&#8217;s future plans for the company are nothing short of fantasy and, despite solid revenue growth, the tech giant is not in a position to produce a profit anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Its listing price was $US135, but Morningstar values the company at around half that price.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Other blockbuster IPOs are likely to follow, and the size of companies like Amazon, Meta, Alphabet and Nvidia continue to grow exponentially.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;These are very highly profitable companies, but they are ploughing all of their cash into the next big thing,&#8221; Dale said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And the question is whether or not they can make it work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As for investors, whether they can make it work seems to be a side issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This week, for example, despite concerns about a lasting Iran war ceasefire and the threat of rising US interest rates, billions of dollars poured into semiconductor stocks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">And based on what?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A huge swing in semiconductor sentiment lifted US markets in overnight trading,&#8221; Moomoo Australia&#8217;s Michael McCarthy wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The rally was based on the flimsiest of news flow and narrowly focused on chip hardware manufacturers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It seems the moral hazard of knowing governments are there to underwrite the stock market means even the flimsiest piece of news can lead to a sudden rush of billions of dollars into the market.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A US flag flies outside the New York Stock Exchange.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/6788e21b27169443cf75fa7ba955ab90.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The US stock market fell by more than 50 per cent during the GFC. (Reuters: Andrew Kelly)<\/p>\n<p>The trillion-dollar question<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It all begs the question: are share markets now a one-way bet?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At the very least, given the support for big stocks in the market, can we now rule out the possibility of a stock market crash or a disastrous slump of between 40 to 50 per cent in the market?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The last time the US stock market fell by more than 50 per cent was during the global financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If you listen to [American billionaire investor and founder of Bridgewater Associates] Ray Dalio, he is telling you that, effectively, the US is broke and things are going to go very badly wrong at some point,&#8221; Dale said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It is inevitable. The timing is very hard to pick.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loading<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This is the idea that the US government is not currently in a position, or lacks the fiscal fire power, to rescue big Wall Street banks at present if they do run into financial trouble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Indeed, the weaker US bond market has been something of an alarm bell in this regard in recent months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The US 10-year Treasury bond yield was trading at a two-year high of 4.6 per cent earlier this year.
