The spacecraft landed in March 1982, encountering Venus\u2019s ultra-harsh conditions: a surface temperature of 870 degrees Fahrenheit, atmospheric pressure 90 times that of Earth, and clouds of sulfuric acid. Venera wasn\u2019t just a spacecraft mission but an engineering exercise designed to survive what is arguably the most hostile planetary surface in the solar system, where temperatures are hot enough to melt lead, and the pressure is equivalent to being 3,000 feet underwater.\n<\/p>\n<p>Lethal Venus<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73970\" class=\"wp-image-73970\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/NASA-Discovery-2-1012022.jpg\" alt=\"NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-73970\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NASA\u2019s Space Shuttle Discovery. Image Credit: 19FortyFive.com taken on October 1, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Venus is roughly Earth-sized and often called Earth\u2019s twin. But in reality, the surface of Venus is insanely dangerous. Why? Runaway greenhouse effect; the dense atmosphere consists of 96 percent CO\u2082. This has trapped enormous amounts of heat in the atmosphere. The surface temperature barely changes between day and night.\n<\/p>\n<p>The atmosphere is so dense that a descending spacecraft effectively has to move through liquid-like air. So landing on Venus is not like landing on Mars; Venus is more like descending into a gigantic pressurized furnace.<\/p>\n<p>Building the Landing Craft<\/p>\n<p>In building the Venera spacecraft, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2026\/06\/russia-spent-years-trying-to-build-its-own-sr-71-blackbird-and-the-plane-it-designed-might-have-been-even-faster\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Soviet engineers<\/a> assumed the landers would eventually die. That was all but assured. So the goal was humble: to delay death long enough to allow the crafts to transmit scientific data back to Earth.\n<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, Venera was constructed as a titanium-reinforced pressure vessel with a thick metal shell and heavily insulated interior\u2014something like a giant thermos, or a deep-sea <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2026\/06\/russia-built-a-24000-ton-submarine-for-one-job-sinking-u-s-navy-aircraft-carriers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">submarine<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>The main challenges facing the craft were pressure and heat. The external pressure on Venus was essentially trying to crush the spacecraft, while the heat was trying to cook the electronics. The result was that engineers were forced to create a spacecraft that was a heavily armored capsule, a miniature submarine designed to operate inside an oven.\n<\/p>\n<p>The Cooling Problem<\/p>\n<p>Against the intense heat of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebsco.com\/research-starters\/visual-arts\/soviet-venera-spacecraft-transmit-first-pictures-surface-venus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venus<\/a>, normal cooling systems were impossible. Air conditioning would have been useless; the outside air was already pushing 900 degrees Fahrenheit. So the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2026\/05\/cubas-soviet-missiles-once-shot-down-a-u-s-u-2-spy-plane-in-1962-today-they-couldnt-stop-a-single-f-35-stealth-fighter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Soviet<\/a> solution was to pre-cool the spacecraft\u2019s interior to -10 \u00b0C before atmospheric entry. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/soviet-venera-venus-missions-slideshow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venera<\/a> was also constructed with thick thermal foam and sealed compartments.<\/p>\n<p>But the engineers knew that the spacecraft would gradually absorb heat, so the objective was just to buy time\u2014to slow heat transfer rather than stop it outright.\n<\/p>\n<p>Getting Through the Atmosphere<\/p>\n<p>The density of Venus\u2019s atmosphere was such that it would slow the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/more-than-50-years-after-trying-to-reach-venus-a-failed-soviet-spacecraft-is-about-to-return-to-earth-255836\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spacecraft<\/a> rapidly. Parachutes were deployed to increase survival time, but they also increased the time the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2026\/05\/nasa-test-pilot-neil-armstrong-was-one-of-seven-men-secretly-chosen-to-fly-the-x-20-dyna-soar-a-reusable-air-force-spaceplane-cancelled-in-1963-two-decades-before-the-space-shuttle-and-the\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spacecraft<\/a> would spend cooking in the heat. So the Soviet solution was to cut the parachutes at an altitude of 31 miles above the surface; the spacecraft intentionally descended quickly because taking the extra time to descend gradually would have been deadly.\n<\/p>\n<p>The Science Package<\/p>\n<p>What the probes were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetary.org\/articles\/every-picture-from-venus-surface-ever?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=20504859982&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADozrydP16aiKaaZAubVILhQLthyR&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwt7XQBhBkEiwAtStpp_UajL7t_Ax13j7XHGQq9AfSFzhEwaa8KoeRcgdbDzZ6p1t5-o_hSBoCwoQQAvD_BwE\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">designed<\/a> to do, aside from survive briefly, was collect data. Color cameras on Venera 13 offered the first color panoramas from another planetary surface. The images showed orange-brown volcanic rocks, a hazy yellow sky, and flat basalt slabs. <a href=\"http:\/\/this_is_what_the_venera_14_spacecraft_recorded\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Microphones<\/a> recorded wind, drill sounds, and mechanical activity from the probes themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The drill sound being recorded was from Venera\u2019s pyrotechnic-powered system. But on the surface, the Venera still had to withstand the elements and prevent atmospheric gases from entering the spacecraft.\n<\/p>\n<p>The solution was a sealed vacuum-lock-style chamber from which an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer was operated. The spectrometer detected volcanic basalt, rich in sulfur and potassium. In sum, the Venera spacecraft were not simply cameras but miniature robotic geology labs.\n<\/p>\n<p>The Lens Cap Accident<\/p>\n<p>Space exploration rarely goes off without a hitch. Famously, the Venera 14 camera lens was released and fell to the surface of Venus. Then, the spacecraft\u2019s mechanical soil arm was deployed and landed directly on the discarded lens cap.\n<\/p>\n<p>The result was that the spacecraft measured the compressibility of the Soviet lens cap rather than the Venusian soil. The spacecraft performed flawlessly, but was defeated by its own lens cap placement in what has been remembered as one of space exploration\u2019s most famous engineering mishaps.\n<\/p>\n<p>The Big Picture<\/p>\n<p>The Venera missions demonstrated extreme planetary engineering capability at a time when the USSR was competing directly with the US. The information gathered is still used today and has influenced future missions, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2026\/04\/artemis-ii-is-about-to-splash-down-theres-a-helium-leak-thats-10-times-worse-than-expected-nasa-says-its-fine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>\u2018s DAVINCI and VERITAS missions.\n<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73971\" class=\"wp-image-73971\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/NASA-Discovery.jpg\" alt=\"NASA Discovery\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-73971\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NASA\u2019s Discovery.
