It was Andy Pages<\/a>\u2019 wife, Alondra, who told the Dodgers\u2019<\/a> center fielder on June 3 that MLB All-Star voting had opened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI simply just told her, [the ballots] don\u2019t really matter to me,\u201d Pages said through interpreter Juan Dorado, in a conversation with The Times earlier this month. \u201cI\u2019m just going to keep doing what I\u2019m doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doing just that has worked out well for Pages. When MLB released the first All-Star balloting update Monday, Pages led all National League outfielders with 800,496 fan votes, putting him in prime position to claim a starter\u2019s spot.<\/p>\n

He has added to his All-Star case against the Baltimore Orioles this weekend, largely with his defense. In the Dodgers\u2019 3-2 loss Saturday<\/a>, he authored his third highlight-worthy play of the series. Ranging into right field, Pages tracked down a line drive off Tyler Ward\u2019s bat and made a sliding catch for the first out of the third inning.<\/p>\n

The day before, on the first play of the game, Pages cut off Ward\u2019s hit to the right-field gap before it could reach the warning track, spun, and threw a dart to second base to nab him trying to stretch a single into a double.<\/p>\n

Dodgers fans chanted Pages\u2019 name in the sixth inning Friday, after he robbed Jeremiah Jackson of a hit with another sliding grab in shallow left-center field.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s going to be in that Gold Glove conversation,\u201d manager Dave Roberts<\/a> said Saturday. \u201cHe\u2019s engaged every pitch. It\u2019s just fun to see a young player value the defense, all the while taking care of business in the batters\u2019 box. He\u2019s a complete player, he really is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phase 1 of All-Star fan voting, which lasts until June 25, determines the starter finalists \u2014 two at each position (six outfielders) in each league. Pitchers and reserves are chosen through the player ballot (which includes votes from players, coaches and managers) and commissioner\u2019s office selections.<\/p>\n

Pages was one of four Dodgers leading their respective position groups, joined by first baseman Freddie Freeman, third baseman Max Muncy and designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, who led all players with 1,165,133 votes. Catcher Will Smith and shortstop Mookie Betts were sitting in second place, and Teoscar Hern\u00e1ndez was No. 5 among NL outfielders.<\/p>\n

The others have all won multiple All-Star nods. This would be Pages\u2019 first.<\/p>\n

He entered Saturday with top-five defensive fWAR (4.9) among NL outfielders and a top-nine slugging percentage (.490). He carried the Dodgers\u2019 offense early in the year, while the team\u2019s established stars got off to a slow offensive start.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would mean a lot to me for all the work, and all the things that I do to get ready for the game and to prepare,\u201d Pages said. \u201cIt would mean a lot in that sense. But I also know it\u2019s completely out of my control, especially having gone through it last year, where I didn\u2019t really have any chance to dictate whether I was going to make it or if I didn\u2019t make it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Going into the All-Star break last year, Pages was on the cusp. Because the outfield pool doesn\u2019t take specific positions into account, it didn\u2019t matter that among qualified National League center fielders he had the second-highest fWAR (2.8) and OPS (.804), behind the Cubs\u2019 Pete Crow-Armstrong \u2014 while leading that group in batting average (.285).<\/p>\n

Pages was instead competing with all NL outfielders. In those same categories he still ranked an impressive eighth and 10th (among qualified hitters).<\/p>\n

Fans voted in Crow-Armstrong, the Cubs\u2019 Kyle Tucker and the Braves\u2019 Ronald Acu\u00f1a Jr. as All-Star starters. So, Pages\u2019 All-Star fate was in the hands of the player ballot (which includes votes from players, managers and coaches) and the commissioner\u2019s office selection process.<\/p>\n

Pages didn\u2019t quite make the cut, with the Diamondbacks\u2019 Corbin Carroll, the Marlins\u2019 Kyle Stowers, the Padres\u2019 Fernando Tat\u00eds Jr. and the Nationals\u2019 James Wood claiming the reserve spots.<\/p>\n

This year is already playing out differently.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s been just up the top of the leaderboards, one of our better hitters the whole season,\u201d hitting coach Aaron Bates said earlier this month. \u201cIt\u2019s not just a good two or three weeks. So I definitely feel like he\u2019s an All-Star.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, when the ballots first came out, Pages knew better than to make any assumptions. That same focus on controllables, turning the page on from failure, has helped spur Pages\u2019 consistency.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe work ethic, obviously, those changes, and how I prepare for the games has changed a lot,\u201d Pages said. \u201cBut also, I just don\u2019t really focus on anything like I used to. I just focus on getting ready and prepared and do the best I can that day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roberts had seen that shift. He noticed all the work Pages put in over the offseason and through the spring, drilling down on his plate discipline, a soft spot in his game. And Roberts named Pages his pick to click at the end of camp, saying he wouldn\u2019t be surprised if Pages made the All-Star team.<\/p>\n

Since then, Roberts, who will also manage the NL All-Star team, has appreciated how diligent Pages has remained in his routine.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we all know, he\u2019s not a self-promoter at all,\u201d Roberts said. \u201cHe just wants to play baseball, and so for the fans to recognize that, they\u2019re getting it right, as far as the person, the talent, the performance. And so that\u2019s really good to see. So hopefully he can keep playing well, and then solidify that No. 1 spot. That\u2019d be fun. That\u2019ll be fun to have him in Philly with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ohtani hit a solo home run in the ninth inning in his first game back after missing Friday\u2019s walk-off win<\/a> for the birth of his second child, but it wasn\u2019t enough to ignite a ninth-inning comeback in a 3-2 loss to the Orioles.<\/p>\n

Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto<\/a> didn\u2019t put together as dominant of a performance as he did a week ago against the White Sox, when he took a no-hit bid into the ninth inning.<\/p>\n

He gave up six hits and issued two walks in six innings. But he managed to hold the Orioles (36-42) to three runs, getting out of jams in the second and fourth innings.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt took me a little time to get the feel for the splitter,\u201d said Yamamoto through interpreter Yoshihiro Sonoda. \u201cAnd then in the meantime I was trying to grind it out with different options, with other pitches.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Dodgers (49-28) wasted the quality start with a four-hit offensive night, which included two from Tommy Edman and one from Betts.<\/p>\n

The Dodgers finally recorded their only hit against Orioles starter Trevor Rogers in the fifth inning, when Edman reached on a weak pop fly to center field. Rogers turned the game over to the Orioles\u2019 bullpen after the seventh, and it did enough to maintain the lead, despite shaky defense in the ninth.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t our night,\u201d said Miguel Rojas, whose deep fly out in the seventh inning fell just shy of a two-run homer. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to bounce back and come back tomorrow and get the series.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blake Treinen placed on injured list<\/p>\n

The Dodgers<\/a> put right-handed reliever Blake Treinen<\/a> on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.<\/p>\n

Treinen was the winning pitcher in the Dodgers\u2019 6-5 victory Friday<\/a>, after retiring the side in order in the top of the ninth.<\/p>\n

According to Roberts, Treinen felt normal after the game. But when he woke up Saturday morning, he had trouble fully extending his right arm. When he went in for treatment, it became clear the Dodgers would have to put him on the IL.<\/p>\n

Treinen underwent imaging, but Roberts did not have his exact diagnosis.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019ll be down for a minute,\u201d Roberts said. \u201cI think it was more of just staying away, getting rest, versus anything more aggressive right now.\u201d <\/p>\n

Treinen has a 3.52 ERA after bouncing back from a rocky 2025.<\/p>\n

In a corresponding move, the Dodgers recalled right-hander Chayce McDermott. The 27-year-old has only thrown one major-league inning this season, when he limited the Angels to one hit in a scoreless inning.<\/p>\n

The Dodgers acquired McDermott from the Orioles in mid-April, after Baltimore designated him for assignment. He\u2019s been a frequent short-term call-up and taxi squad member since.<\/p>\n

The Dodgers have more bullpen help coming. They hope to reinstate right-hander Brock Stewart (left foot bone spur) from the injured list Monday, Roberts said.
