Bill Maher called out his audience as \u201cf\u2013king liars\u201d for claiming they cared about former President Barack Obama\u2019s nearly $1 billion Presidential Center.<\/a><\/p>\n

Maher criticized the design idea and purpose of the near-windowless, 225-foot-tall museum at the center of the complex that opened in Chicago on Friday<\/a> during a discussion with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif) and journalist Jonathan Martin. <\/p>\n

\u201cDo we have a picture of the Obama library? Because it looks like something aliens built in Dubai,\u201d Maher said on \u201cReal Time<\/a>.\u201d \u201cIt cost $850 million.<\/a> I don\u2019t understand why progressives like this. Couldn\u2019t that money be better spent on something else?<\/p>\n

\u201cWho\u2019s gonna go to this? Why does anybody need a presidential library? These monuments to some of these ego, out of office,\u201d he began to say.<\/p>\n

The 70-year-old comedian then polled his audience on whether any member was planning to visit the center in Jackson Park in Chicago\u2019s South Side.<\/p>\n

The question got a resounding round of applause, but Maher wasn\u2019t buying the response.<\/p>\n

\u201cReally? You\u2019re all a bunch of f\u2013king liars,\u201d Maher said. \u201cYou\u2019re not going to the Obama library.\u201d<\/p>\n

Khanna, who was a panelist on Friday\u2019s show, questioned Maher\u2019s problem with a building honoring the first and only Black president of the United States as he compared the money spent to Elon Musk\u2019s billion-dollar venture to Mars.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, we don\u2019t need that building to do that,\u201d Maher said. \u201cThat\u2019s in our hearts and minds. That already happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

Khana, a fifth-term congressman representing the South and East Bay regions of the San Francisco Bay Area, proclaimed that Michelle Obama gave \u201cone of the greatest speeches\u201d at the Obama Center dedication.<\/p>\n

The 49-year-old politician said the former first lady spoke about how her husband fought against racism and insults while showing \u201chope and patience and aspirations can overcome it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does that have to do with a building?\u201d Maher retorted. \u201cWe didn\u2019t know that story without the building? Like unless you go to the building you\u2019re like \u2018Obama, who was he again?’\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cDeath Star\u201d shaped center <\/a>will feature a museum, a community hub, a new branch of the Chicago Public Library, and an athletics and recreation space along with other outdoor spaces. <\/p>\n

Khanna argued that the building represents more than just the eight years of Obama\u2019s presidency and has impacted millions of lives in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do think Obama\u2019s story is unique, I\u2019m biased, I worked for him but it\u2019s a unique story of telling the possibilities in this country,\u201d Khanna said. \u201cWhen I was in law school, an intern, they said to me \u2018Ro, you\u2019re Indian-American, you\u2019re of Hindu faith, go to the Capitol because you\u2019re never getting elected to anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what I heard, and then Barack Obama happened and he changed the direction of this nation for millions of people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgain nothing to do with a building,\u201d Maher said.<\/p>\n
