{"id":885157,"date":"2026-06-22T15:47:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T15:47:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/885157\/"},"modified":"2026-06-22T15:47:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T15:47:16","slug":"bonnie-arnold-on-toy-story-snoopy-unleashed-animation-snobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/885157\/","title":{"rendered":"Bonnie Arnold On &#8216;Toy Story&#8217;, &#8216;Snoopy Unleashed&#8217; &#038; Animation Snobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tStoried animation producer <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/bonnie-arnold\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bonnie-arnold\" data-tag=\"bonnie-arnold\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bonnie Arnold<\/a> gave short shrift to those who are snobbish about her beloved discipline at <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/annecy\/\" id=\"auto-tag_annecy\" data-tag=\"annecy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Annecy<\/a> today. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/toy-story\/\" id=\"auto-tag_toy-story\" data-tag=\"toy-story\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toy Story<\/a> and How to Train Your Dragon producer, who started out in live action with the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/dances-with-wolves\/\" id=\"auto-tag_dances-with-wolves\" data-tag=\"dances-with-wolves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dances with Wolves<\/a> and The Addams Family, had some simple words for those who see animation as beneath them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cOur films make more money than their films,\u201d she said during a masterclass at the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/annecy-international-animation-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_annecy-international-animation-film-festival\" data-tag=\"annecy-international-animation-film-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Annecy International Animation Film Festival<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cIt keeps the lights on,\u201d added Arnold, before politely checking with the crowd of mostly French animation fans that they were aware of the meaning of this phrase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tShe was responding to a question from moderator Justin Johnson, the BFI\u2019s lead programmer, who said Arnold is \u201cliving proof that in Hollywood being a good person can go hand in hand with being a good producer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tArnold talked the audience through a decades-long career that has seen her work on some of the biggest animated movies of all time, a leading female voice in an industry traditionally dominated by men that is slowly improving its gender balance. \u201cI was used to being in a room full of men, laughing at their jokes,\u201d she said wryly about the start of her career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWhile she has worked on a plethora of huge studio movies, Arnold is currently producing Apple TV\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/snoopy-unleashed\/\" id=\"auto-tag_snoopy-unleashed\" data-tag=\"snoopy-unleashed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Snoopy Unleashed<\/a>, which she said is set up in a different way and shows the direction in which the industry is headed. The film follows Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang, who go on an emotional and wondrous journey to the vibrant Big City when Snoopy runs away from home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s been a different kind of challenge because there wasn\u2019t a studio building,\u201d said Arnold. \u201cThere was [producer] WildBrain, there were people in Canada, independents, director Steve Martino and we called on a lot of people we liked [to work on the movie]. There are still studio movies being made but there is a lot of independent work. Everyone does their bit and the result is quite amazing.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>\u201cI said Toy Story would \u2018change animation&#8217;\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tReflecting on the early part of her career, when she transitioned from Dances with Wolves to Toy Story having spoken to then-Pixar boss John Lasseter, Arnold said there was something strangely serendipitous about the two movies, and revealed what they had in common.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cThe budget was the same for both,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was $17M. And I thought that was a sign.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tShe added that she had a good feeling about both when she saw the test screens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019d finished the Dances with Wolves test, which people said would be a disaster but I said would change people\u2019s perspectives about the Native American experience,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd for Toy Story I had a tingling in my neck after watching the Buzz and Woody test that said, \u2018This is going to change animation\u2019.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIt was after Toy Story that Arnold was contacted by DreamWorks Animation founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, who eventually persuaded her to join Dreamworks, where she made some of her best work. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tArnold was speaking at Annecy on a packed lineup.
