It’s offical:\u00a0Michael<\/a>,\u00a0Antoine Fuqua<\/a><\/strong>‘s anticipated\u00a0Michael Jackson<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0musical biopic, has beat it out of this year’s Oscar race. <\/p>\n

As Gold Derby reported months ago<\/a>, the Lionsgate film made an expected move from a planned Oct. 3 release to April 24, 2026. <\/p>\n

Michael had been targeted as potential awards bait coming into 2025, but its fate seemed iffy when it was omitted from Lionsgate’s CinemaCon <\/a>presentation to movie theater exhibitors in April. This was a 180 from last year’s CinemaCon when the studio shared a first look at\u00a0Michael. <\/p>\n

Weeks later, Lionsgate executives said the film was likely to shift into 2026 amid reports<\/a> that the four-hour cut would be reconfigured as a two-part release. The two-fer is no longer on the table; instead, Fuqua has been given extra time to chop Micheal down to a single film with a manageable running time.<\/p>\n

The movie has been beset with controversy. In January,\u00a0Puck<\/a>\u00a0reported that\u00a0Michael, which wrapped production last May, faced extensive reshoots because of an alleged agreement signed between the late superstar’s estate and a then-underage accuser who claimed Jackson had sexually abused him. Puck also reported the film would not sweep the sexual abuse allegations made against Jackson in the early 1990s under the rug. Reshoots\u00a0reportedly<\/a>\u00a0started in March and production costs ballooned to more than $150 million.<\/p>\n

Produced by\u00a0Graham King<\/strong>, who won an Oscar for\u00a0The Departed\u00a0and was nominated for\u00a0Bohemian Rhapsody,\u00a0Michael\u00a0stars\u00a0Jaafar Jackson<\/a><\/strong>, Jackson’s nephew and the son of\u00a0Jermaine Jackson<\/strong>, as the King of Pop as it tracks the singer’s career from his start in the\u00a0Jackson 5<\/strong>\u00a0to his death in 2009.\u00a0Colman Domingo<\/strong>, seeking his third Oscar nomination, plays family patriarch\u00a0Joe Jackson<\/strong>, while\u00a0Nia Long<\/strong>\u00a0plays matriarch\u00a0Katherine Jackson<\/strong>. The cast also includes\u00a0Miles Teller<\/strong>,\u00a0Kat Graham<\/strong>,\u00a0Larenz Tate<\/strong>,\u00a0Laura Harrier<\/strong>, and\u00a0Derek Luke<\/strong>.
