(WTVD) &#8212; Durham received some much-needed rain Tuesday, but experts say it&#8217;s nowhere near enough to pull the city out of its <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/abc11.com\/post\/nc-drought-draining-durhams-main-water-sources-threatens-food-supply-lake-michie-dries-tough-restrictions-effect\/19317691\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ongoing drought<\/a>. The city is now in its second week of <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/abc11.com\/post\/nc-drought-2026-mandatory-water-restrictions-effect-durham-customers-restaurants-businesses-no-car-washing-lawns\/19301269\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stage 2 water restrictions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Residents welcomed the brief downpour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;Yeah, we needed the rain,&#8221; said Peter Raider, who was headed to a haircut downtown. He said the dry conditions have been obvious across the city including at the Duke University Golf Course, where watering has been limited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">City officials say one rain event won&#8217;t ease restrictions. Durham remains in &#8220;exceptional drought,&#8221; the most severe category on the U.S. Drought Monitor. For the most part, water usage has dropped <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/abc11.com\/post\/durham-water-restrictions-local-businesses-warn-financial-strain-stage-2-rules-begin-monday\/19283789\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">since Stage 2 began<\/a>.  Water officials say they&#8217;re seeing water demand go down.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"hsDdd NDJZt sJeUN IJwXl vBqtr KrDt itslR zFTjo hakZw HlUVI \" data-testid=\"prism-image\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/19365600_062326-wtvd-durham-water-grafic-img.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">At Soif, a downtown coffee-and-cocktail bar, manager Mars Ward said customers immediately noticed a change. The business previously offered self-serve citrus-infused water, but under Stage 2 rules, restaurants can only serve water upon request.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;We&#8217;re not supposed to serve water unless asked,&#8221; Ward said. &#8220;Usually it&#8217;s over there in the corner, and now it&#8217;s vacant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Though officials say many residents are doing their part to conserve, not everyone is following the rules. <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.durhamnc.gov\/m\/newsflash\/home\/detail\/4174\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The city<\/a> has received 107 complaints about possible violations. Penalties range from verbal warnings to fines of $100 to $250. Repeated violations could lead to water service being disconnected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">For many, Tuesday&#8217;s rain still offered a moment of relief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;It&#8217;s always exciting to see some rain when things are a little too dry,&#8221; said resident Brittany Snedeker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The last major drought in North Carolina occurred in 2007-2008, prompting Durham to establish its Water Shortage Response Plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \"><a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/abc11.com\/apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong class=\"vtkaO \">Download the ABC11 News app<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2026 WTVD-TV.
