Former City Comptroller Brad Lander is the projected winner of the 10th Congressional District<\/a> primary covering southern Manhattan and northern Brooklyn. He is poised to unseat the incumbent, Dan Goldman, in a heated contest largely over where the candidates stand on numerous progressive issues, as well as Israel in its ongoing war in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Mamdani had supported Lander in the 10th District race, and the democratic socialist mayor also saw another one of his picks, Queens Assembly Member Claire Valdez<\/a>, prevail in the primary for the 7th Congressional District seat held by the retiring Nydia Vel\u00e1zquez.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite being a freshman Assembly member, Valdez appears to have defeated two more experienced candidates in Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Queens City Council Member Julie Won.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

The mayor\u2019s third Congressional candidate in the primary, meanwhile, pulled off possibly the biggest upset of the night.

Darializa Avila Chevalier has apparently defeated U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat with more than three-fourths of all scanners reported.<\/p>\n

Chevalier, a community organizer who helped lead the 2024 pro-Palestine protests at Columbia University, has a roughly 2,200-vote edge on Espaillat, who conceded the race to her during a campaign speech Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

It was a stunning defeat for Espaillat, the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, who had held the seat since 2017 after becoming the first Dominican American member of the House.\n<\/p>\n

Another big Congressional primary in Manhattan is the 12th District covering Manhattan and currently represented by the retiring U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler. Assembly Member Micah Lasher<\/a> is the projected winner with 94% of all scanners reporting, securing roughly 4,000 votes more than his colleague in the state\u2019s lower house, Alex Bores.<\/p>\n

Despite the high stakes in the Democratic primaries, the turnout in this year\u2019s contests is a far cry from that generated a year ago in the mayoral primary. Through 6 p.m. Tuesday night, the city\u2019s Board of Elections<\/a> reported 420,527 voter check-ins in the 2026 primaries, including the 172,743 voters who took part in the nine-day early voting period that concluded on June 21. That means a little less than 250,000 voters had cast ballots on Primary Day itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n

By contrast, more than 1 million votes were cast<\/a> in the 2025 mayoral primary.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

The one primary battle atop everyone\u2019s ballots in New York City on Primary Day is the race for the Democratic nomination for state Comptroller. Incumbent Thomas DiNapoli is facing two challengers in Drew Warshaw and Raj Goyle.<\/p>\n
