{"id":888700,"date":"2026-06-24T04:41:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T04:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/888700\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T04:41:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T04:41:13","slug":"san-antonio-councilwoman-misty-spears-accepted-free-tickets-to-yes-alamodome-show-mayor-jones-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/888700\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio Councilwoman Misty Spears accepted free tickets to Ye\u2019s Alamodome show, Mayor Jones says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 San Antonio District 9 Councilwoman Misty Spears accepted free tickets to Ye\u2019s upcoming Alamodome concert, Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones confirmed to KSAT, as the city debates whether the show should happen at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">During KSAT\u2019s 6 O\u2019Clock Q&amp;A, Jones said a city staff member sent an email to the mayor and all councilmembers offering free tickets to the rapper\u2019s show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cCouncilwoman Spears said, \u2018I\u2019ll take three tickets,\u2019\u201d Jones told KSAT anchor Ernie Zuniga.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><b>Watch the full interview below: <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, is scheduled to perform on July 4 at the city-funded downtown stadium for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2026\/06\/17\/ye-kanye-west-concert-expected-to-bring-in-another-potential-record-crowd-at-alamodome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2026\/06\/17\/ye-kanye-west-concert-expected-to-bring-in-another-potential-record-crowd-at-alamodome\/\">concert that is expected to bring a record crowd<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">The concert has drawn backlash from the mayor and other elected officials, including some who gathered at the Holocaust Memorial Museum on Tuesday to denounce Ye for his antisemitic comments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWhen we are thinking in using the peoples\u2019 resources, I think it\u2019s extremely important that we are much more thoughtful about the message that we send when we invest their time, their energy and their resources into providing somebody a platform who has years\u2019 worth of hate speech and antisemitic rhetoric,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZ8kFSJM4e1\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZ8kFSJM4e1\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==\">In a statement<\/a> written \u201cwhile visiting Israel,\u201d Spears agreed with the council\u2019s stance on denouncing antisemitism. However, the councilwoman said it\u2019s \u201cequally important\u201d to be committed to the Constitution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThat commitment cannot depend on whether we agree with someone\u2019s views,\u201d Spears said. \u201cThe First Amendment protects offensive speech, not just popular speech. Unless laws have been broken or there are credible threats to public safety, government should not be in business of using its authority to suppress speech based on viewpoint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">On Tuesday night, her office said in a statement to KSAT that the councilwoman had accepted the tickets for a staff member and guest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cAt that time, she was unaware of Ye\u2019s antisemitic comments and hateful rhetoric,\u201d the statement said. \u201cAs soon as she became aware of those statements, Councilwoman Spears immediately and unequivocally condemned them and declined the tickets. The tickets were never received, and no one from her office will attend the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">In a separate City Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZ77uBwOGOn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DZ77uBwOGOn\/\">statement<\/a> posted Tuesday \u2014 signed by Spears, along with Jalen McKee-Rodriguez (D2), Sukh Kaur (D1), Teri Castillo (D5), Marina Alderete Gavito (D7) and Marc Whyte (D10) \u2014 the councilmembers said \u201cthe City does not endorse his (Ye\u2019s) rhetoric by allowing use of a public venue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cWe can condemn hate without resorting to censorship, which could set a precedent toward limiting expression based on objectionable viewpoints,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">While the mayor said has acknowledged she does not have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2026\/06\/23\/san-antonio-jewish-community-calls-on-city-officials-to-decline-use-of-alamodome-for-ye-concert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2026\/06\/23\/san-antonio-jewish-community-calls-on-city-officials-to-decline-use-of-alamodome-for-ye-concert\/\">the six City Council votes<\/a> needed to cancel the concert, she has pushed back on colleagues who cited potential legal costs as a reason not to act. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Box-_wrDxHtU__Box-sc-10sa3ie-0 Text-nO2aZ44r__TextBase-sc-s2hv5x-0 jJNfBD fSvavs article-text\">\u201cThe contract is very clear. We can stand firmly against antisemitism while also standing firmly for the Constitution. Those principals are not in conflict. San Antonio should thrive to welcome artists who bring people together- not those whose public platforms are built on antisemitism, racism, or other forms of hate.
