BEXAR COUNTY, Texas<\/strong> \u2013 A Bexar County Sheriff\u2019s Office deputy shot a man twice Tuesday evening after he allegedly advanced on deputies while wielding \u201clarge knives,\u201d according to Sheriff Javier Salazar.<\/p>\n

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. in the 8400 block of Knapp Rise, near Ranch View and Culebra Road. The sheriff\u2019s office said neighbors reported seeing the man going onto their porches and hiding near their homes.<\/p>\n

Salazar said the man was waving knives, which the sheriff described as miniature samurai-style blades around 10 inches long.<\/p>\n

BCSO\u2019s Mental Health Unit was also dispatched to the scene to help deescalate the situation, but deputies made contact with the man before the unit arrived, Salazar said.<\/p>\n

Three deputies attempted to communicate with the man and repeatedly asked him to drop the weapons while taking cover behind a pillar. Salazar said the man did not comply and advanced toward deputies.<\/p>\n

One deputy fired several shots, striking the man twice, Salazar said. <\/p>\n

The man was hospitalized in critical condition. He underwent surgery and is expected to survive, according to Salazar.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn unfortunate incident of the man undergoing a mental health crisis,\u201d Salazar said.<\/p>\n

The deputy who shot the man is a 16-year veteran with BCSO. Salazar said the deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.<\/p>\n

The sheriff said investigators believe the man is in his 30s, and they are looking into whether he lives in the area. The sheriff also said the man may have had a separate run-in with deputies the night before.<\/p>\n
