{"id":889083,"date":"2026-06-24T08:45:12","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T08:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/889083\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T08:45:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T08:45:12","slug":"scottsdale-claims-it-is-cracking-down-on-str-offenders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/889083\/","title":{"rendered":"Scottsdale claims it is \u2018cracking down\u2019 on STR offenders |"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">As the Progress reported last month, the Scottsdale Police Department made nine arrests in two weeks after two shooting incidents at short-term rentals.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a press release last week, the city says it is going after \u201cbad actors\u201d on the STR scene.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The subject line of the city\u2019s email:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cScottsdale cracks down on nuisance parties and illegal activity at short-term rentals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to Holly Peralta, a city spokeswoman, Scottsdale issued 56 charges and citations related to short-term rental activity in May, including violations tied to nuisance parties, criminal investigations and licensing compliance.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;We will not allow a small number of bad actors to jeopardize the safety and character of our neighborhoods,&#8221; said City Manager Greg Caton.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Residents deserve to feel safe in their homes, and we are committed to using every tool available to address nuisance activity, unlawful events and criminal behavior associated with short-term rentals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Some who responded to a Progress Facebook post were unconvinced.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cOh please,\u201d Kristie Faye commented. \u201cThe city tries so hard to give the illusion of caring, but until they start shutting down the bachelor &amp; bachelorette parties &amp; actually enforce occupancy ordinances, the neighbors are still left to suffer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cEvery weekend is a new group of loud obnoxious (expletive).\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Karen Rambat added:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI wonder how much money the city makes off of STRs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The press release underscored the May 6 shooting \u201cstemming from a party at a short-term rental in the Maya complex\u201d in Old Town.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This incident resulted in multiple arrests \u2013 as well as a suspect being shot by police.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe property owner was cited for operating without a required city license,\u201d according to Peralta, \u201cwhile the renter was cited for hosting and promoting a nuisance party and operating an event venue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Officers also responded to multiple large parties involving underage alcohol consumption, she noted, investigated assaults and domestic disturbances \u201cand handled several alcohol-related medical emergencies, including incidents requiring hospitalization.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">And two large &#8220;promoter-sponsored events advertised through social media&#8221; were identified and stopped before they could occur after coordination between police and property owners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Our officers are taking a proactive approach because we know the impact these incidents can have on surrounding neighborhoods,&#8221; said Police Chief Joe LeDuc. &#8220;When short-term rentals become venues for criminal activity, large disruptive parties or unsafe behavior, we will take enforcement action. Our goal is simple: protect residents, preserve neighborhood quality of life and hold violators accountable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Michele Wehry\u2019s response to that on Facebook:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cAbout time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Peralta noted \u201cthe increased enforcement activity follows years of work by Scottsdale&#8217;s multidisciplinary Short-Term Rental Working Group \u2026<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Recent efforts have included expanded officer training focused on nuisance-party investigations, improved coordination among departments and accelerated identification of unlicensed operators.
