City of Mishawaka to Conduct Goose Relocation Effort<\/b><\/p>\n
The City of Mishawaka is preparing to begin its second goose relocation effort in the past two years as part of its humane, ongoing wildlife management strategy to address the growing Canada goose population and the impacts it is having on parks, waterways, public spaces, and neighborhoods throughout the community.<\/p>\n
The relocation will be conducted by a wildlife management contractor approved and permitted by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and in accordance with all applicable state and federal regulations governing the humane capture and relocation of Canada geese.<\/p>\n
Over the past several years, the City has invested significant time, effort, and resources into a wide variety of non-lethal goose deterrent measures recommended by wildlife management professionals and the Indiana DNR. These efforts have included:<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Bird-X ultrasonic deterrent systems<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Coyote decoys<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Green laser deterrents<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Remote-controlled vehicles and boats<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Noise deterrent devices<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Temporary fencing barriers<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Habitat modification techniques<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Backpack blower dispersal efforts<\/p>\n
\u00b7 K-9 goose management programs<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Specialized turf treatments and repellents<\/p>\n
\u00b7 Professional wildlife management consultation<\/p>\n
While these efforts have provided some temporary relief, the goose population has continued to grow, resulting in increasing concerns related to excessive droppings, damage to turf and landscaping, water quality impacts, aggressive behavior during nesting season, and reduced enjoyment of parks and public gathering spaces.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe City has worked diligently to implement a wide range of humane, non-lethal management techniques over several years,\u201d said Matthew Lentsch, Executive Director of Development and Governmental Affairs. \u201cUnfortunately, despite those efforts, the population continues to exceed what many of our public spaces can reasonably sustain. Relocation has become a necessary and responsible management tool to help restore balance while continuing to treat wildlife humanely and respectfully.\u201d<\/p>\n
The relocation effort is part of a broader, long-term wildlife management strategy intended to protect public health, preserve community assets, improve the quality of parks and public spaces, and reduce the impacts associated with overpopulation.<\/p>\n
