{"id":889985,"date":"2026-06-24T18:11:22","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T18:11:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/889985\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T18:11:22","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T18:11:22","slug":"third-australian-h5-bird-flu-case-confirmed-in-sa-another-suspected-wa-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/889985\/","title":{"rendered":"Third Australian H5 bird flu case confirmed in SA, another suspected WA case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A third confirmed case of the deadly H5 bird flu has been found in a migratory bird on Australia&#8217;s southern coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\"><strong>Warning: This story contains an image of a dead animal some readers may find distressing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said the state recorded the avian influenza in a giant petrel found at Knights Beach on the Fleurieu Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said two sick birds came into the care of a local wildlife rescue group on June 14.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Once that was drawn to the attention on June 19 to the relevant authorities in South Australia, we responded quickly and enabled and facilitated active testing of those birds for H5 bird flu,&#8221; the premier said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This afternoon we received those results and they confirmed that one of those birds was negative and one them was positive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Peter Malinauskas stands in front of aboriginal flags in a press conference\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/312c06ded7fb79b44fcc584d30e292f4.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Peter Malinauskas confirms a case of H5N1 bird flu has been found in Fleurieu Peninsula. (Supplied: Simon Gorta)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Malinauskas said <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-23\/dead-seabirds-near-sa-border-tested-for-h5n1-bird-flu\/106830690\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106830690\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two other sick birds found at Fowlers Bay<\/a> yesterday had tested negative for the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It comes after two birds were confirmed to have the disease near the town of Esperance in Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The country&#8217;s chief veterinary officer Dr Beth Cookson said there was no indication it had spread from those two birds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Genomic sequencing shows the virus in that initial bird \u2014 a brown skua \u2014 is related to an outbreak on Heard Island and McDonald Islands.<\/p>\n<p>Another suspected WA case<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Meanwhile, WA authorities said an additional bird had tested positive for the virus, but will need to be confirmed by the CSIRO.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">That bird was found 700 kilometres north-west of Esperance near the tourist town of Dunsborough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said she was in contact with both of her WA and SA counterparts about managing the cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;At this stage there is no evidence of any mass mortalities, there is also currently no evidence of infection in poultry or in our agricultural production system, and there continued to be a low risk to human health,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Her WA counterpart, Jackie Jarvis, said there was no evidence the virus had spread to native birds or wildlife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However samples had been taken from a dead porpoise found in the Esperance region at the weekend, and were being tested for the bird flu.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"dead porpoise blurred\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/b645238e4db0f3727c60953e7d122629.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The dead porpoise was found washed ashore on the southern coast of Western Australia.\u00a0 (Supplied: Toni Howler)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We do not know how long the porpoise was dead for, and so I will urge caution, if those samples are OK to be tested, they will be tested,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">WA chief veterinary officer Michelle Roden said this particular strain of the bird flu meant it was unlikely to spread from mammal to mammal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">\u201cGenerally with mammals, the way that they get infected is actually consuming a bird, so usually it&#8217;s animals that eat birds,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">More seabirds are expected to wash ashore in Western Australia as the coast is battered by a forecast low-pressure system this weekend.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Older woman with shoulder length grey hair and burgundy jumper stands in front of ocean.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/d5f40277f5216782e4c0cbe3a40d1606.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Christine Wilder convenes BirdLife WA&#8217;s Cape to Cape bird group.
