{"id":89018,"date":"2025-07-24T16:04:16","date_gmt":"2025-07-24T16:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/89018\/"},"modified":"2025-07-24T16:04:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T16:04:16","slug":"rnc-chair-expected-to-run-for-senate-in-north-carolina-as-lara-trump-opts-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/89018\/","title":{"rendered":"RNC chair expected to run for Senate in North Carolina as Lara Trump opts out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-fb5484\" class=\"body-graf\">Republican National Committee Chair Michael Whatley intends to run for Senate in North Carolina and would have the White House&#8217;s full support, a source familiar with the matter told NBC News.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-72549b\" class=\"body-graf\">President Donald Trump conveyed to Whatley in a direct discussion this week that he supported him for the seat, a<strong> <\/strong>separate source familiar with the matter said . <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a9f242\" class=\"body-graf\">President Donald Trump\u2019s daughter-in-law Lara Trump, who was considered a top potential contender, also announced Thursday morning that she would not run for the seat.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e418a7\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cAfter much consideration and heartfelt discussions with my family, friends, and supporters, I have decided not to pursue the United States Senate seat in North Carolina at this time,\u201d she said in a statement. \u201cI am deeply grateful for the encouragement and support I have received from the people of my home state whom I love so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1e3b84\" class=\"body-graf\">Whatley&#8217;s expected run comes after Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2026-election\/gop-sen-thom-tillis-not-running-re-election-north-carolina-rcna215819\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">unexpectedly announced<\/a> late last month that he would not seek re-election, making the race to fill the seat one to watch in the 2026 midterms.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-58ff41\" class=\"body-graf\">The RNC chair&#8217;s decision was first reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/07\/24\/whatley-senate-north-carolina-trump-00473419?fbclid=IwY2xjawLu-1ZleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHpgrGqiqWuyBvywKh0YdIU_6dcwQZdp1-t9gX9iy8WmFIgSIuGgNR6mT6nJ3_aem_ZaZNNKd-7jax-0ZU_ycCNQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">by Politico. <\/a>An RNC spokesperson did not immediately provide a comment, and a White House official did not provide further details about Trump&#8217;s conversation with Whatley. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-eaf659\" class=\"body-graf\">NBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2026-election\/former-gov-roy-cooper-plans-enter-north-carolina-senate-race-rcna217720\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previously reported <\/a>that former Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, also plans to launch a Senate campaign. Whatley and Cooper are expected to be the top contenders in the high-stakes race in the battleground state.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f82eca\" class=\"body-graf\">Lara Trump had also been considering a run, and she told NBC News last week that she was hoping to make a decision by Thanksgiving. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-596e2c\" class=\"body-graf\">Whatley previously met with National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Tim Scott about a potential Senate run in North Carolina, and the NRSC had been floating Whatley as a possible replacement for Tillis since January, according to a GOP operative. Tillis did not announce his plans to not seek re-election until months later.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2e1913\" class=\"body-graf\">Whatley took the helm of the RNC<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-officially-takes-over-republican-national-committee-rcna142362\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> last year <\/a>after Trump endorsed him as the chair and Lara Trump as a co-chair. She stepped down in December and hosts a Fox News show.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-09a57f\" class=\"body-graf\">Before his tenure at the RNC, Whatley served as the chair of the North Carolina Republican Party.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ff07dc\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump has previously heaped praise on Whatley, saying in his RNC endorsement that he is a friend who \u201chas been with me from the beginning, has done a great job in his home state of North Carolina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0c0304\" class=\"body-graf\">The president also said earlier this month that his daughter-in-law would be his \u201cfirst choice\u201d to fill Tillis\u2019 seat. While she doesn&#8217;t live in the state, he said, \u201cshe\u2019s there all the time, her parents are there.
