NASCAR heading to San Diego next year<\/a> will \u201cmark the sixth straight year that NASCAR has introduced a new venue to the tour,\u201d but the first time that all three divisions — Truck Series, Xfinity Series and Cup Series — \u201cwill be running in a first-time event,\u201d according to Bill Center of SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. NASCAR Chief Venue & Racing Innovation Officer Ben Kennedy said with the \u201ctie to the Navy and the nation\u2019s anniversary,\u201d it was \u201cimportant to have all three series\u201d in San Diego. Kennedy: \u201cOne of the questions in our planning was timing. Do we do it in 2026, 2027 or beyond? We wanted to have it happen next year. It\u2019s a once-in-a-generation program for us.\u201d Center noted NASCAR has been \u201ceager to return to Southern California since Auto Club Speedway closed<\/a>.\u201d In 2023-2024, NASCAR held its preseason Busch Clash race at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, but that has since been moved to Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. What is \u201cunknown\u201d is whether San Diego\u2019s Naval Base Coronado will \u201cremain on the NASCAR schedule after 2026 or whether the military-themed event will be moved to other bases\u201d (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 7\/23<\/a>). <\/p>\n

STREET LEVEL<\/b>: In Chicago, Kyle Williams wrote the Chicago Street Race \u201cfaced obstacles from the city and weather during its three-year run,\u201d but racers \u201cloved the course because of the change of pace from their usual oval courses.\u201d Many drivers said that they \u201cwanted to continue the street race regardless of where it was held.\u201d Williams noted the Chicago Street Race — along with NASCAR holding the preseason Clash inside the Coliseum — \u201cimbued NASCAR with the confidence to continue experimenting on where they could hold races\u201d (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 7\/23<\/a>). FIELD LEVEL MEDIA\u2019s Samuel Stubbs wrote the move to San Diego is one that \u201cseemed like something out of \u2018The Twilight Zone\u2019 as recently as a decade ago.\u201d But three years of racing in downtown Chicago proved NASCAR \u201ccould successfully have a race on a street course.\u201d It is \u201canother bold, new-age scheduling decision\u201d from Kennedy (FIELD LEVEL MEDIA, 7\/23<\/a>). <\/p>\n

MARKET EXPANSION<\/b>: Stubbs noted San Diego \u201cmakes sense in a modern motorsports landscape focused on taking a racing product to major markets and potential new fans that otherwise wouldn\u2019t seek it out.\u201d San Diego is a \u201cmuch-needed addition to the NASCAR schedule and a return to the Southern California market.\u201d Stubbs: \u201cIf you dig deeper, it\u2019s also the first in what could be a long line of experiments with regard to new, untapped markets that are being pursued by NASCAR\u201d (FIELD LEVEL MEDIA, 7\/23<\/a>). Center in a separate piece noted Legacy Motor Club owner Jimmie Johnson also sees NASCAR\u2019s move into markets like San Diego, Chicago and Mexico City \u201cas ways to expand the sport.\u201d Johnson said, \u201cThe more we can move into major markets and also hit new pockets around the country where we haven\u2019t traditionally been will only grow the sport. And it bolsters relationships that we already have.\u201d He added it is a \u201creally smart strategy moving into new markets and moving dates around to do what is best for the sport\u201d (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 7\/23<\/a>).<\/p>\n

WILL YOU BE BACK?<\/b> In Chicago, Robert Channick noted whether NASCAR returns to Chicago \u201cremains to be seen,\u201d but NASCAR is \u201cmaintaining its Chicago office<\/a>\u201d and reiterated yesterday it \u201chopes to be racing again on the streets of Chicago down the road\u201d (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 7\/23<\/a>).
