\n\tOlivia Wilde<\/a> said in a new interview<\/a> with The Cut <\/a>that a \u201cscreaming match\u201d never took place on the set of \u201cDon\u2019t Worry Darling,\u201d nor was she \u201cnot available on set\u201d as highly-publicized rumors suggested at the time. Wilde\u2019s 2022 psychological thriller, headlined by Florence Pugh<\/a> and Harry Styles, descended into tabloid chaos amid rampant speculation over an apparent feud between Pugh and Wilde, plus the romance between Wilde and Styles that allegedly originated during production.<\/p>\n

\n\tVulture reported\u00a0<\/a>just ahead of the film\u2019s theatrical rollout in Sept. 2022 that a \u201cblowout argument\u201d between Pugh and Wilde occurred about three-quarters of the way through production on \u201cDon\u2019t Worry Darling.\u201d Pugh had allegedly grown \u201cfed up with the director\u2019s frequent unexplained absences,\u201d citing that Wilde and Styles would disappear together from the set amid their burgeoning romance. Pugh allegedly made contact with New Line Cinema\u2019s then-chairman Toby Emmerich to ensure that she would not have to \u201cparticipate in the film\u2019s life cycle in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve never had a screaming match on my set. I was never not available on set. I wanted to be like, \u2018None of this is true,\u2019\u201d Wilde now told The Cut, noting that the studio and others involved in the movie demanded she stay quiet on all the alleged drama. \u201cI was told, \u2018Don\u2019t say a fucking word. Just go out there and smile.\u2019 I resent that, but it taught me it\u2019s not the way I want to handle things.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSummarizing this tumultuous period of her career, Wilde turned to advice Jennifer Garner once gave her more than a decade ago: \u201cShe said it\u2019s like you get cast in a soap opera by the public. And they assign you an obvious archetype: the damsel in distress, the good girl, the pretty girl. I became the full-on villain. Like Cruella.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWilde previously expressed on \u201cCall Her Daddy\u201d<\/a> regret over staying quiet during the \u201cDon\u2019t Worry Darling\u201d press fiasco.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI never felt more disconnected from the person that people were talking about. It was also very strange to see complete fiction traded as fact,\u201d Wilde said. \u201cI wanted to be like, \u2018Can I just talk to people?\u2019 Can I just go and say like, \u2018That\u2019s not true?\u2019 And it was like, \u2018No, that won\u2019t help.\u2019 And that was really hard\u2026 I felt I was working on behalf of hundreds of people [who worked on this movie]. I felt frustrated that I couldn\u2019t defend myself but it was not about [me]\u2026 I think that my own attempt to be strong and to kind of like rise above it in a way came off as inauthentic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWilde was fiercely defended by her crew during the rampant rumors of unprofessionalism on the \u201cDon\u2019t Worry Darling\u201d set. A group of 40 crew members that worked on the movie issued a joint statement<\/a> in support of Wilde after Vulture\u2019s report of a screaming match between the director and Pugh. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe crew, including producer Katie Silberman, cinematographer Matthew Libatique and costume designer Arianne Phillips, denied such an incident ever took place and praised Wilde as \u201can incredible leader and director who was present and involved with every aspect of production.\u201d They stressed that \u201callegations about unprofessional behavior on the set of \u2018Don\u2019t Worry Darling\u2019 are completely false.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs a crew, we\u2019ve avoided addressing the absurd gossip surrounding the movie we\u2019re so proud of, but feel the need to correct the anonymous \u2018sources\u2019 quoted in a recent article,\u201d the statement read. \u201cThere was never a screaming match between our director and anyone, let alone a member of our cast.\u201d<\/p>\n
