He\u2019s tired as s\u2013t. They give him Ambien to be able to sleep,\u201d the former president\u2019s son claimed. \u201cHe gets up on stage, and he looks like he\u2019s a deer in the headlights. And it feeds into a f\u2013king story that anybody wants to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amid these claims, some have voiced concerns about the former president\u2019s possible use of the drug, which has been linked to memory problems and daytime grogginess.<\/p>\n<p>Ambien (generic name zolpidem), a\u00a0prescription medication\u00a0for insomnia, is intended only for short-term use, according to GoodRx.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the more serious and rare side effects can include hallucinations, \u201cabnormal thinking and behavior,\u201d and \u201cpossible increased risk of dementia in\u00a0older adults.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During a Tuesday appearance on \u201cFox and Friends,\u201d political reporter and author Salena Zito commented on the president\u2019s alleged use of Ambien.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the guy who\u2019s supposed to answer the 3 a.m. phone calls \u2014 it\u2019s bewildering,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t imagine a doctor prescribing that to a president, and I can\u2019t imagine that this has been a secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ambien is under scrutiny following recent claims about\u00a0Joe Biden\u2019s\u00a0use of the popular sleep aid. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who should not take Ambien?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The medication\u2019s prescription information warns of \u201cpotential impairment of activities requiring complete mental alertness,\u201d including operating machinery or driving a motor vehicle, which can last until the day after taking it.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) states that pilots and aircrews should not fly within 24 hours of taking a sleep aid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll currently\u00a0available sleep aids, both prescription and OTC, can cause impairment of mental processes and reaction times, even when the individual feels fully awake,\u201d the agency states in its \u201cDo Not Fly\u201d guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy equipment and machinery operators should also refrain from operating machinery within seven to eight hours \u2014 or ideally until the following day \u2014 after taking the drug due to delayed cognitive and motor recovery, according to the medication\u2019s prescribing info.<\/p>\n<p>Commercial truck drivers should adhere to these same cautions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For drivers taking a prescription sleep aid, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration states that a medical examiner will review each medication and request a letter from the prescribing doctor to determine whether the drug will \u201cadversely affect safe operation\u201d of a commercial motor vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Biden falls on stage during the 2023 United States Air Force Academy Graduation Ceremony at Falcon Stadium, Thursday, June 1, 2023, at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.  AP<\/p>\n<p>Experts also urge caution for law enforcement, first responders and\u00a0medical workers\u00a0in acute healthcare settings due to the risk of slowed reaction time, \u201ccognitive fog\u201d and errors in judgment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there may be times when physicians require sleep aids, but not in a way where they could interfere with performance during procedures,\u201d Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News\u2019 senior medical analyst, told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n<p>For military personnel, the Department of Defense (DOD) requires service members to get a minimum of seven hours of sleep per night for \u201cmilitary readiness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hunter Biden alleged that the sleeping pills could have contributed to his father\u2019s apparent cognitive struggles during the first 2024 presidential debate.
