{"id":892782,"date":"2026-06-25T22:52:19","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T22:52:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/892782\/"},"modified":"2026-06-25T22:52:19","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T22:52:19","slug":"new-bridge-at-victoria-pass-to-link-sydney-with-western-nsw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/892782\/","title":{"rendered":"New bridge at Victoria Pass to link Sydney with western NSW"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After a convict-built bridge failed 110 days ago, causing the main route linking Sydney and the state&#8217;s west to shut, the New South Wales Government has unveiled its plans to reopen the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A new bridge will be built at Mitchell&#8217;s Causeway on the Great Western Highway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The state government has announced construction is expected to start in the next few weeks, with the road expected to reopen this time next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The new bridge will be built over the existing 200-year-old structure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The road at Little Hartley, just past Lithgow, has been closed since March due to instability, leading to long diversions for trucks and commuters and affecting visitation to businesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A picture of a road with no cars and closure signs\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/17ab1bf03089f77f82bf61949d4549f6.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Great Western Highway was shut in both directions at Victoria Pass on March 9, 2026. (ABC Central West: Xanthe Gregory)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The new crossing will be located, as we&#8217;ve thought, on the same alignment, supported by deep piles anchored into the bedrock,&#8221; NSW Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said in an interview with the ABC this morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">\u00a0&#8220;The bridge will be constructed above the existing causeway, which will enable [it] to be stabilised and preserved and also allow for a future additional lane.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Support for businesses<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The state government also announced an additional $20 million to increase the financial support available for affected small businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Grants have now been increased from $10,000 to $25,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The move comes after the government released a <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-21\/great-western-highway-financial-support\/106699634\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106699634\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$3.5 million support package<\/a> to &#8220;buffer&#8221; businesses and councils from the financial impacts of the closure earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"road winding between cliffs and trees\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/4599e5163f3302c8edd9d12735d1e7ca.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The road winds through the steep Hartley Valley.
