Houston\u2019s FIFA Fan Fest attendance is 17% higher than expected so far, Chris Canetti,<\/a> president of Houston\u2019s host committee, said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The total attendance for Fan Fest and the Houston Dynamo\u2019s Soccer Celebration activities through the first two weeks of the tournament is more than 260,000, he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo weeks in, everything is not only meeting our expectations but far exceeding them,\u201d Canetti said. \u201cEverything is going so well, running so smoothly. It’s been absolutely phenomenal so far and we hope we can see it all the way through on this level of success.\u201d<\/p>\n

WORLD CUP GUIDE:<\/strong> What to know for the event in Houston<\/a><\/p>\n

FIFA Fan Fest, located in EaDo, has a capacity of 7,500. It has reached capacity multiple times, including for all three Mexico matches during the World Cup, leading to spilloff to other businesses and Shell Energy Stadium.<\/p>\n

Organizers planned for Fan Fest to be open for 34 of 39 days during the World Cup but bad weather has resulted in two days where the festival was closed for the entire day and other days when hours were shortened from the original plan.<\/p>\n

Canetti said weather, both heat and rain, were expected to be challenges. But Canetti noted that the two unplanned off-days, which came after the first weekend of the tournament, did allow the host committee to take a step back and make adjustments to further improve the experience going forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere wasn’t this need to make these wholesale changes,\u201d Canetti said. \u201cEvery little piece of the operation, you learn something every single day, and you figure something out on how to get better. I think it was more about just small fine-tuning issues on all aspects of the event operations to get better.\u201d<\/p>\n

How to deal with the heat and concerns emerged as a storyline following the first day of Fan Fest but Canetti said only 17 people out of the more than 260,000 people have needed a medical transport from the area.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur heat mitigation in medical response has been very effective, and we’re seeing fewer heat-related cases than expected,\u201d Canetti said. \u201cSeventeen medical transports out of 260,000 attendees is a strong statistic proving that all of the heat mitigation tactics and even the response tactics from the medical people have worked according to plan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canetti also said that the feedback from the teams who have played in Houston has been very positive.<\/p>\n

DR Congo, the lone team base camping in Houston during the group stage, has also been \u201cextremely happy\u201d with its setup, Canetti said. The Leopards are practicing at SaberCats Stadium and staying at the Omni Houston Hotel.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’ve literally gotten a large number of emails from high-level representatives of the various federations complementing Houston overall, what a great city it is, how welcoming it’s been and how simple and easy and accommodating it’s been during their trip here,\u201d Canetti said.<\/p>\n

But Houston\u2019s World Cup experience is about to shift into a different gear. The last group stage match in Houston is Friday\u2019s matchup between Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The next two matchups are knockout stage matches, which presents more of a mystery for the city. Houston has known most of the teams playing in the group stage in the city since December. The teams coming for the round of 32 matchup Monday and round of 16 matchup on July 4 won\u2019t be finalized until less than a week before the games.<\/p>\n

Brazil secured a spot in the round of 32 match Wednesday.<\/p>\n
