It’s just that he doesn’t necessarily come across as quite the most personable player or someone who is too vocal. Still, what he’s been able to show his new defensive coordinator, Anthony Campanile, is more than enough — perhaps preferred, Walker can be himself.

“He’s a great player, obviously, but, I said this the last time I talked to you guys. He’s a great person. He’s got a lot of leadership qualities. I don’t think there’s anybody in the building that doesn’t genuinely love the guy,” Campanile said Thursday, the second day of camp.

Jaguars training camp Day 2 observations Defense wins the day with two interceptions

“He’s just a great human being, got a great energy about him. It’s credit to everyone that raised him because, he’s the type of guy you love to coach him. Teammates love playing with him and his coaches love coaching him.”

Walker has been a consummate pro since entering the league and has grown on the field, too. Walker has a chance to become the first player in franchise history to reach double-digit sacks in three straight seasons. The former No. 1 pick had 10.5 sacks last year after tallying 10 sacks the year before.

Walker’s growth will only continue. He reiterated that just after practice on Thursday, noting his status as a “potential” player during the 2022 draft cycle.

“I wouldn’t say a different guy, because like everybody knows, I was drafted off of potential. I started pass rushing at defensive end, probably, say my sophomore year of college. I always had the athleticism to be great, but now I’m starting to just put everything together,” Walker said when asked to reflect on his rookie season to now.

“There are some things where I’m like, ‘oh shoot, I definitely could have worked on some things better right here.’ But now it’s just trying to get one percent better every day, every year. That’s the main goal.”

Travon Walker’s leadership continues to build entering fourth season

It’s hard to believe Walker is already one of the longest-tenured players on the team, but given the turnover the last few years, it’s true. He’s played three seasons in the NFL and is already up for a contract extension. Some players are younger who can look up to him.

“Me, I just think it’s No. 1, honing in on me personally, myself, I have to do things the right way first. And then going from there, just try to pour into the other players as they come to me and ask questions. Like I said, there are a lot more guys who are younger than me who are coming to me and asking questions and things of that nature. And just leading by example on the field. That’s the main thing,” Walker said when asked about becoming more a leader in Year 4.

Leading by example is one of Walker’s best traits. He doesn’t scream and shout to tell players what to do. They will naturally follow him.

“I talk, joke, laugh around, joke around, things of that nature, but I’m more of a go out there and get the job done, and obviously, there are a lot of guys that just see the hard work that I put in and the dedication that I have for the love of the game,” said Walker.

While he’s not known as a vocal guy, Campanile says players listen when the defensive end stands up and says something. He’s focused, not quiet.

“I think when he speaks, people listen. And there’s a lot to that when somebody, who maybe people perceive isn’t that vocal, which he is. He’s vocal in the building. But when he speaks, it means something to the guys on the team and people listen,” said the defensive coordinator.

As a rising fourth-year vet, Walker says he has improved dramatically on the mental side of the game, specifically in the film room.

“I’d like to say just my mental aspect, and obviously in the film room, I know exactly what I’m looking for once I go into the film room. Now I have more of a routine when it comes to film study, treatment, things of that nature,” Walker said. “I feel like just going into year four, I’m a lot more mature when it comes to how I’m carrying myself in the building and how I’m going about myself outside of the building as well.”

Walker will look to continue building on what he’s done thus far in his career. He will get a chance to show his full potential in September, but will give the coaching staff a preview when pads go on on Tuesday.

Demetrius Harvey is the Jacksonville Jaguars reporter for the Florida Times-Union.
