\n\tThe first trailer for Oliver Hermanus<\/a>\u2018 poetic The History of Sound<\/a>, starring The Crown\u00a0Emmy winner Josh O\u2019Connor and\u00a0Gladiator II\u00a0standout\u00a0Paul Mescal<\/a>,\u00a0dropped today.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe World War I love story is adapted from Ben Shattuck\u2019s Pushcart Prize-winning short story. Hermanus (Beauty, Moffie) directs for Cop Car\u00a0producer End Cue.\u00a0Molly Price, Alison Bartlett and Chris Cooper also star.<\/p>\n

\n\tShattuck\u2019s short story revolves around two young men, Lionel (Mescal) and David (O\u2019Connor). The film, set in 1917, sees Lionel \u2014 a young, talented music student \u2014 meet David at the Boston Conservatory, where they bond over a deep love of folk music. Years later, Lionel receives a letter from David, leading to an impromptu journey through the backwoods of Maine to collect traditional songs. This unexpected reunion, ensuing love affair, and the music they collect and preserve, will shape the course of Lionel\u2019s life far beyond his own awareness.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tLest readers think this sounds too much like Brokeback Mountain \u2014 also adapted from a prize-winning short story \u2014 Mescal has made his disagreement clear.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI personally don\u2019t see the parallel at all between\u00a0Brokeback Mountain, despite the fact that we spent a little bit of time in a tent,\u201d he said in Cannes<\/a>. \u201cWhen I look at\u00a0Brokeback Mountain,\u00a0it\u2019s dealing with repression, this film is pointed in the opposite direction. To be honest, I find those comparisons lazy and frustrating.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHermanus added that the comparison, despite the films\u2019 differences \u201cshows there should be more forms about these nuances of queer relationships, beyond the context what most movies deal with.\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n

\n\tDeadline\u2019s chief film critic Pete Hammond beamed<\/a> about the movie in his Cannes review: \u201cDeliberately paced and gorgeously shot by Alexander Dynan,\u00a0The History of Sound\u00a0may unfold slowly but give it a chance and it will wrap you up and take you places movies don\u2019t often go these days\u2026This may be Mescal\u2019s best work in films yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMubi took North America rights out of Cannes, while Focus Features took international. Mubi\u00a0has<\/a> set<\/a> the film\u2019s U.S. theatrical release for September 12.<\/p>\n
